Make Your Pet Fair-Famous!

Abandoned animals are sometimes found on fairgrounds. Many times the animals are adopted by fair employees willing to give a home to the unfortunate animal. In turn these pets become the pride and joy of their newfound family.

Western Fairs Association is collecting these stories for a special feature. Have you or someone you know adopted an animal from a fairgrounds? Send us a photo and a short description and it may be published in the upcoming issue of the Fair Dealer.

Celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the Modern Fair

At this year's Fall Managers Conference in Sacramento, Western Fairs Association unveiled Exhibit in a Box. Made in America: The Story of the Modern Fair celebrates the 200th anniversary of the modern agricultural fair in 2011. The exhibit is a wonderful depiction of how the modern fair has evolved over the last 200 years into the fair we've all come to love today.

Each fair in attendance received a free Exhibit in a Box that included:

  • Building plans (for every budget)
  • Electronic files
  • Paint samples
  • Panel samples
  • Sample press release and sponsorship letter
  • Materials lists
  • Budget planning

Made in America: The Story of the Modern Fair was funded in part by the California Department of Food and Agriculture's Division of Fairs and Exposition. Research, text and contemporary fair photographs of the exhibit were provided by Drake Hokanson and Carol Kratz, authors of the award-wining book Purebred & Homegrown: America's County Fairs. The Exhibit in a Box is for sale through Western Fairs Association ($300 for members and $500 for nonmembers).

To place your order or for more information about Made in America: The Story of the Modern Fair contact Carrie Wright at (916) 927-3100 or email carriew@fairsnet.org.

WFA Board Selects 2011 Officers

The Western Fairs Association Board of Directors met by conference call on November 1 to review their Nominating Committee's recommendation for 2011 officers. The committee's recommendations were:
  • President--Don Delahoyde, Five Star Catering Owner
  • Vice President--Sandy Woods, Nevada County Fair CEO
  • Treasurer--Kent Hojem, Western Washington Fair CEO
The slate received the unanimous support of the Board and the new officers will be formerly inducted on January 19 at the Industry Awards Dinner, held in conjunction with the Western Fairs Association Convention and Trade Show.

WFA programs and activities are overseen by a 20-member Board of Directors elected by various segments of the membership. Board officers serve single-year terms and are elected by the Board. WFA directors serve as volunteers and, in general, meet quarterly. The next regular meeting of the WFA Board will be held on November 28-29, in conjunction with the IAFE Convention in Las Vegas.
