Ollie's Offerings

The Fellowship Hall, the classrooms and the sanctuary were filled!

How good it was to see more than 100 of you out to enjoy stories and slides from my recent Kenya trip with Habitat Aid Initiative! How good it was to then see more than 100 of you attend our "Youth Group Kick-Off" last Sunday night!   How good it was to be leading chapel today for a sanctuary of two and three year old Dayschool worshipers! APC's hallways and classrooms are trafficked non-stop as the church year has truly begun!

Disciple Bible studies have begun, ACT1 shows are rehearsing for upcoming performances, the choir is back in the chancel, three Sunday services are being offered, the church softball team has taken the field, the STARS seniors fellowship group has resumed its luncheons and our church family retreat is just around the corner. Adult learners are gathering to learn about financial stewardship, the formation of Scripture and C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity. Thanks to Mission and Open Arms Sundays, worship services have been deeply moving and well-attended. A large group of members is already working hard to prepare for APC to be a part of the Family Promise homeless ministry which will open soon. And on, and on, and on.

All of this to say, I encourage you to get involved in the life, worship and work of your church! There are countless ways to share your gifts, grow in faith and enjoy the good company of this Christ centered family. God is doing great things in our midst. Please add your thanks, your prayers and your very self! A great year has just begun, be a part! www.alpharettapres.com

"Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it."

1 Corinthians 12:27

Grace and Peace,

Ollie

New Member Class

If you are interested in joining APC in membership, and learning more about the faith and life of the church, this class is for you! APC's next New Member Class will be held on Sunday, September 30, October 7 and October 14 from 9:45-10:45am in the theater. New members will be received by the Session and introduced to the congregation on Sunday, October 21. Please speak with Ollie or Jamie, and contact Carol in the church office to express your interest in participating in this process carol@alpharettapres.com.

American Flag Display

Our flag is included in our worship presence this Sunday in recognition of constitution week, September 17-23. The Constitution of the United States of America was enacted into law on September 17, 225 years ago.The preamble states, "We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote general Welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this constitution for the United States of America."

We all can celebrate this week by learning even more about our three branches of government, the Amendments and the Bill of Rights.

Family Promise Comfort Food Fundraiser Update
Join us on October 6 for a yummy "comfort food" cook-off at Temple Sinai in Dunwoody.  APC will enter the contest with "Comfort Cookies."  Do you have a favorite recipe? We'll provide a variety of wonderful home baked cookies to add something sweet to the evening's festivities and we're looking for cookie bakers.

This family event will raise money to benefit our new mission partner, Family Promise.  Refer to next week's Good News and bulletin for sign up details or contact Allison Neal with questions.
Radio Play

The Big Guns: or Whose Little Lily Is She?

October 5 and 6 at 7:30pm

With songs and smoking six-shooters, we're here to tell the adventures and misadventures of two cattle barons and, most especially, of a beautiful young lady in search of, well, not the usual kind of gold in them thar hills. Is this a musical? Nope. But somewhat like Cat Ballou, Paint Your Wagon and a lot of John Ford westerns, it has words and music that made their way west-songs like "Shenandoah," "Oh My Darling, Clementine," and "Sweet Betsy From Pike." And what's a rousing, sometimes rowdy western without a long-legged, curvaceous but vestal saloon gal? A saucy little filly known as Lily-with a more-than-middling singing voice to boot. A comic valentine to the cowboy and cowgirl heroes of bygone screen, radio and television-Gene, Roy, Hoppy, Coop, The Duke-with a tip of the Stetson to Calamity, Annie O, Belle Star and Cat Ballou.  A story of the Old West, but a different sort of a story.  A tale with a twist.  A rootin', tootin', six-shootin' wing-ding of a western!

All proceeds of this production to benefit the APC STARS group.  Tickets are $10 for everyone.

New Features Enhance APC Website

If you have not recently visited the APC web site (www.alpharettapres.com), you will be pleased to find many new and useful features.  There is now online a complete daily calendar of scheduled events, detailed information on the many ministries at APC and biographies of staff, elders and deacons. There are even links to the current week's bulletin and sound recordings of past sermons.

Advanced password-protected features include an always-current directory of members, a registration page where you can sign up for future events, a complete roster of church groups you belong to, and a status report on your pledge and offerings.  Password protection assures that personal information can be seen only by authorized individuals.  Each member can control how much or how little information can be seen.

Over the next few weeks members will receive a series of emails providing instructions on how to use features of the web site.  If you have questions, contact Carol in the church office.

Walks for a Cause

Are You Walking or Running for a Cause?

On Sunday, September 30, APC's Cancer Care Support Group will sponsor a "Blessing of the Walkers" for the Minute for Mission during service.  There are many cancer awareness/fundraising walks throughout Metro Atlanta in October.  Perhaps you are walking, running or otherwise supporting one of these worthy causes - in memory of a loved one, in support of a patient, or in celebration of survival.  Be with us as we offer up God's blessings upon each and every one of these volunteer efforts.  Please email cancercare@alpharettapres.com if you would like to have your walk acknowledged during this moment.

Lecture Series

How the Bible Came to Be: A User's Guide

Last class this Sunday!

Place: Alpharetta Presbyterian Church (theater)

Instructor: Ryan P. Bonfiglio

It probably comes as no surprise that the Bible did not float down from heaven and land directly in our church pews or on our bookshelves at home. Nor would have the apostle Paul - let alone the prophets or Jesus himself - been familiar with the language or format of contemporary English editions of Scripture. So, how exactly did the Bible as we know come to be? This four-week, Christian Education series aims to explore key aspects of the development of the Christian Scriptures through its nearly 3,000-year history. Week 4: how the marketing and publication of Bible editions during the past century has drastically changed the way in which Christians see and use Scripture today (week 4). While these questions often go unasked by many Christians, having a better sense of how the Bible came to be has important implications for our faith today.

C.S. Lewis Series

The Sunday evening C.S. Lewis lecture series continues.  Jim Motter, an APC member and C.S. Lewis scholar, will lead a 10-week Sunday evening lecture and discussion series on C.S. Lewis' masterwork, Mere Christianity.  The lectures will be held in the theater now through November 11, from 5:30 to 7:00pm. The public is invited.
