Open Arms Sunday

Open Arms Sunday is this Sunday at 11:00am!!!

What is Open Arms?

Alpharetta Presbyterian's first experience with a special needs program began in 1998. A committee formed to introduce a Sunday morning program designed to provide Christian Education for children with special needs and respite during worship for their families. The Promise Class ministry has since grown to offer Vacation Bible School classes, worship opportunities, and partnerships with area organizations for Saturday and summer respite. Also, the Open Arms ministry has expanded its reach to offer support for the elderly and those dealing with cancer and chronic illnesses. Alpharetta Presbyterian feels called to address this need in our church and in the greater community by welcoming people with special needs with open arms.

Open Arms Mission Statement: The Open Arms ministry of APC is committed to fulfilling the promises made at baptism and supporting the mission of APC for individuals of all abilities by

  • Strengthening church family awareness/understanding of individuals with special needs
  • Providing the resources and support for faith formation and spiritual growth
  • Facilitating access to and participation in joyful worship
  • Creating an atmosphere in which God's love is shared through hospitality, acceptance, support, and outreach to the greater community.

For more information go to www.alpharettapres.com or 770-751-0033.

Congregational Meeting

Please attend an important congregational meeting Sunday, September 9 at noon in the sanctuary. We will be voting on improved terms of our land transfer to the City of Alpharetta. Instead of the $10,000 in landscaping previously approved, the City will now pay APC $15,000 cash. All other terms remain the same. If approved, these new terms will need Presbytery approval.

Friends & Fellowship

Second Sunday Reception is this Sunday! Visitors and members, please join the deacons following the congregational meeting in Fellowship Hall for a time of fellowship. Light refreshments will be served. It's a great time to meet new people and catch-up with friends.

Staff Retreat

The church office will be closed on Tuesday, September 11 for an offsite retreat. If there is a pastoral emergency, please contact one of the pastors by their cell phone.

New Member Class

If you are interested in joining APC in membership, and learning more about the faith and life of the church, this class is for you! APC's next New Member Class will be held on Sunday, September 30, October 7 and October 14 from 9:45-10:45am in the theater. New members will be received by the Session and introduced to the congregation on Sunday, October 21. Please speak with Ollie or Jamie, and contact Carol in the church office to express your interest in participating in this process carol@alpharettapres.com.

STARS Luncheon
The STARS will meet Wednesday, September 12 at noon in Room 206/207 for their monthly potluck luncheon and meeting. Please bring a dish to share!  STARS stands for Seniors-Travel-Art-Recreation-Social.  We hope you will join them as they kickoff a new year of fun!
Usher Training

Usher Training/Service Opportunity - Immediately following the congregational meeting on Sunday, September 9, a brief usher training session will be held in the choir room. All usher team members are asked to attend, as well as anyone who feels that this vital service is something they might consider. Ushers/greeters ordinarily serve once monthly, as part of a team, and the all-aspect training led by the service captains is expected to take no longer than 30-45 minutes. If you are on a team now it is important that you attend, and if you simply are curious you are encouraged to participate as well.

Hurricane Assistance

Seven years ago this week, Hurricane Katrina swept through the Gulf of Mexico, destroying homes, devastating the economy, and claiming the lives of many. Because of your generous gifts to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and One Great Hour of Sharing, the Presbyterian Church (USA) has truly been able to help these communities heal and rebuild from that disaster, as well as from the Gulf oil spill in 2010.

Now communities like Plaquemines Parish, profoundly impacted by both Katrina and the oil spill, are in great need once again as a result of Hurricane Isaac. We respond in faith and affirmation that God's might is greater than any storm.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) stands ready to immediately respond to needs identified by mid councils in the affected areas. Trained National Response Team members are being deployed to provide a ministry of presence and help with assessments and other identified needs. Cleanup buckets and Gift of the Heart kits are being assembled for the cleanup and recovery process. Your generosity will make a big difference in the effectiveness of our response.

You can help by making a check payable to "Alpharetta Presbyterian Church" with "Hurricane Isaac - DR000148" in the memo line. Or, you can give $10 now by texting PDA to 20222.

Please pray for those who have already been impacted by the storm and those who will face coastal and inland flooding. Pray for affected families and those who will help with emergency, relief, and recovery efforts. Pray that the hope of Christ will be evident in our response.

Lecture Series

How the Bible Came to Be: A User's Guide

Time: Sunday mornings, 9:45-10:45am, 9/9 and 9/16

Place: Alpharetta Presbyterian Church (theater)

Instructor: Ryan P. Bonfiglio

It probably comes as no surprise that the Bible did not float down from heaven and land directly in our church pews or on our bookshelves at home. Nor would have the apostle Paul - let alone the prophets or Jesus himself - been familiar with the language or format of contemporary English editions of Scripture.

So, how exactly did the Bible as we know come to be?

This four-week, Christian Education series aims to explore key aspects of the development of the Christian Scriptures through its nearly 3,000-year history. Along the way, this series will address a variety of issues, (week 3) the history of ancient and modern translations and how various English versions such as the KJV, NIV, and NRSV differ from one another; and (week 4) how the marketing and publication of Bible editions during the past century has drastically changed the way in which Christians see and use Scripture today (week 4). While these questions often go unasked by many Christians, having a better sense of how the Bible came to be has important implications for our faith today.

C.S. Lewis Series

This is the first week of the Sunday evening C.S. Lewis lecture series.  Jim Motter, an APC member and C.S. Lewis scholar, will lead a 10-week Sunday evening lecture and discussion series on C.S. Lewis' masterwork, Mere Christianity.  The lectures will be held in the theater September 9-November 11, from 5:30 to 7:00pm. The public is invited.

This series is a follow-on to Jim's summer 2011 overview on the life and works of C.S. Lewis. The series will be suited to both long-time fans who have read this book several times and to those who are reading the book for the first time.  High school students are especially encouraged to participate.

Those new to C.S. Lewis will come to know why this book has often been voted the single most influential book for Christians other than the four Gospels.  Don't miss this special series and invite your friends and neighbors to come with you.
