APC Youth Ministry News - January 30, 2012

Issue: 18
January 2012
Greetings!

This Sunday, February 5, marks the 22nd annual Souper Bowl of Caring.   In 1990, a simple prayer: "Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat" inspired a youth-led movement to help hungry and hurting people around the world.

Like Super Bowl Sundays of year's past, this Sunday we will once again use the energy around our nation's biggest sporting event to mobilize and inspire the youth at APC to fight hunger and poverty.

After each service this Sunday, APC youth will take up a collection using soup pots.  100% of our donations will be given to a local charity (this year's charity of choice for APC is The Place of Forsyth). We will report our total to Souper Bowl of Caring so our students become part of the national total.

Through this experience, our youth learn the power of working together to make a difference in the lives of others. Help us make this year's goals a reality as we strive for 100% participation. Let's give every student the benefit of a positive learning experience.  Our goal is $1500, please help us help others this Sunday.

In Christ,

Kelly Edwards, Director of Youth Ministries

A Big Fat Italian Feast ~ March 24

PLANS ARE FINALIZED FOR OUR YOUTH MISSION FUNDRAISER "A BIG, FAT ITALIAN FEAST" ON MARCH 24

Mark your calendars and support your youth!  Reminder, all youth who are attending a summer mission trip must assist with the fundraiser in order to receive partial funding of their trip cost.  There are many opportunities to help!

Here are the details:
  • Youth Service Auction ~  Sunday mornings March 4, 11, 18 (auction will close on March 24 at the fundraiser dinner)
  • Spaghetti Dinner, Silent Auction & Youth Talent Show (5:30 - 8:00pm)

How you can help:

  • Offer your "service" for the service auction (past auction items have included babysitting, dinner making, yard work, sports lessons, etc.)
  • Help sell dinner tickets on Sunday mornings between worship services (March 4, 11, 18)
  • Help with set up, serving and/or clean up at the dinner on March 24
  • Perform in the Youth Talent Show on March 24

Sign up sheets will be available soon.  For more information, contact Michelle Burton.

Tip of the Iceberg Retreat at Calvin Center
iceberg
FEBRUARY 10-12, 2012
COST $75.00 per attendee

In 2009, Calvin Center offered the first Tip of the Iceberg Retreat.  Because it was so successful, Calvin is once again offering this powerful retreat for high school students.  The purpose of the retreat is to create a safe place for all to begin or continue to understand the multi-faceted nature of sexuality.

The leaders at Calvin Center recognized in 2009 that our secular world typically takes a "tip of the iceberg" approach to educating young people about sex and sexuality.  This approach is one dimensional and rarely includes the role of God or spirituality in the equation.

The Tip of the Iceberg retreat takes a holistic approach and includes appreciation for the theological, emotional, physical and spiritual nature of our bodies as more than just flesh and bone but a holy assembly of God's design. We affirm that our sexuality is a part of who we are in God's creation.
