Five Loaves & Two Fish - Middle School Retreat at Calvin Center

APC Youth Ministry News - October 23, 2011

Issue: 7 October 2011
Greetings!

The weather is cooling, the leaves are turning and fall is in full swing.  The Youth Ministry program at APC is in full swing as well, with a number of exciting and meaningful events coming up that will allow your child to grow in the faith.

The photo above was taken at the Middle School retreat at Calvin Center.  Our APC middle schoolers joined over 100 youth from other area churches for a weekend of fellowship and spiritual growth.  In just a couple of weeks, our high school youth will share the same experience.  Retreating from the clutter of our everyday lives is a great way to re-prioritize and strengthen our relationship with God.  I hope that all of our high schoolers will set aside this time for reflection, fellowship and fun.

While our high school students are away, we will have a wonderful opportunity for mission work right here in our back yard.  The Atlanta Community Food Bank serves many non-profit agencies throughout our metro area by collecting and distributing over two million pounds of food each month.  On Saturday, November 12, we will send a group of APC youth and adults to the food bank to glorify God through service to our fellow man.  Sign up information is in the mission section of this newsletter.

Advent is around the corner and that's the time of year when we focus more on giving and serving others.  Why not start today?  This newsletter is full of opportunities to serve God.  The Youth Ministry needs you, and God wants you!

In Christ,
Kelly Edwards, Director of Youth Ministries

Sunday Night Youth Group

Connecting at Youth Group

APC Youth Group is in full swing, meeting on Sunday nights from 5:30 - 7:30 for fellowship and faith.  Youth Group is a time for our middle and high schoolers to come together in a non-worship setting, share a meal and grow in their relationship with Christ and with each other.  We encourage all middle and high schoolers to join us for Youth Group on Sunday nights.

Reel World Night "Bruce Almighty"

What would happen if God decided to take a break?  What if he picked YOU to take his place and gave you all of his heavenly powers?  That's exactly what happens to Jim Carrey, a/k/a Bruce, in this hilarious movie.  Will Bruce use his power for good in the world, or will use it to further his own selfish motives?  Join us on Sunday night for dinner and a movie.  NOTE TO PARENTS: The APC Youth Ministry has purchased a  clear play machine that removes all questionable content from any movie and makes it family-friendly.

High School Retreat November 11-13
Sign up deadline is November 5th!

The High School Retreat to Calvin Center will take place from November 11-13.  APC High School youth will join youth from other churches around Atlanta for a weekend of fun, faith and fellowship centered around this year's theme "Serve 24."   Get ready for a 24 hour retreat centered around service. You will experience what it means to be the hands & feet of Christ in this world, while enjoying all the fun & fellowship that comes with a retreat. You are encouraged to take this 24 hours a step further by serving in your own communities when you leave Calvin on Sunday morning.

While this is a 24 hour retreat for most, APC has reserved space for Friday night as well.  Cost of the retreat is $45 per child.

Sunday School for Middle & High School

APC offers three Sunday School classes for middle and high schoolers.  Sunday School is a great way for the youth to connect with each other in a small group setting, get to know each other more personally and develop bonds of friendship through faith.  All classes meet from 9:45 - 10:45am in the upstairs "youth area" of the church.    To learn more about the curriculum in each Sunday School Class, visit the Youth Website Sunday School Page.

Summer Mission Trips & Fundraiser

Details about our summer mission trips will be published in this newsletter on November 7.

Traditionally at APC, youth mission trips are funded in thirds.  One third of the cost is paid by APC, one third of the cost is paid by the participant and one third of the cost is raised through fundraising efforts.

Mission Giving Opportunity:

kidz2leaders, inc. is a Marietta-based ministry that works with prisoners' children in the metro-Atlanta area.

Children are introduced to the ministry by attending a one-week summer camp, Camp Hope and then participate in year-round programming.

This year, kidz2leaders is looking for individuals and families to sponsor a Camp Hope family's Christmas dinner by donating $50.  Contributions will provide our Camp Hope families with a $50 Kroger gift certificate that will be given to them at the annual hope4christmas party.

Donations can be made to kidz2leaders, inc. and mailed to 4385 Lower Roswell Road, Marietta, GA 30068 or online.
