Ollie's Offerings
Like every denomination, Presbyterians have a system of church governance that includes "writing the rules" of how we operate. Our Book of Order details how matters of property, leadership, ministry, worship, finances and discipline are to be handled. Because we are "Reformed and always reforming," we revise our Book of Order often as the Spirit brings us new understanding of God's word in an ever-changing world. This past week, Presbyterians made national news with the latest amendment to the Book of Order having to do with "ordination standards" for elders, deacons and pastors.
Language added in the early 1990s that required ordained leaders "to live either in fidelity within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman, or chastity in singleness" has been dropped. The newly revised language in our Book of Order will read, "Standards for ordained service reflect the church's desire to submit joyfully to the Lordship of Jesus Christ in all aspects of life. The governing body responsible for ordination and installation shall examine each candidate's calling, gifts, preparation, and suitability for the responsibilities of office...Governing bodies shall be guided by Scripture and the confessions in applying the standards to individual candidates."
Within our Presbytery, as across the nation, a number of members, pastors and congregations have expressed their opposition to this amendment and are deeply concerned about what it will mean for our denomination. Others (in the majority) are very pleased and excited for this change. As for me, I opposed the inclusion of the "chastity and fidelity" language when it was added twenty years ago. So, I welcome the change and think it makes good polity regarding leadership requirements. Should you want to learn more, I direct you to the Presbytery's website which is www.presbyteryofgreateratl.org.
In a letter to the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta, our Executive Presbyter, Dr. Thomas Evans, wrote, "This change in the book of order emphasizes the historic role of the local ordaining body to assess a person's fitness for ordination. No governing body can be forced to ordain any person which the governing body does not approve. Our presbytery will continue to use the same procedure for examining candidates as it has in the past. Our ability to respectfully disagree and continue to embrace one another as brothers and sisters in Christ serves as an important witness to a world polarized by disagreement."
Please pray for your deacons, elders and pastors at APC and nationwide; and for the fellowship and witness of the PC(USA).

Career Transition
APC Career Transition Program - With Metro Atlanta's unemployment rate still hovering around 10%, many members and friends of APC find themselves unemployed or underemployed. When those who have given up are no longer job hunting, as well as those who want full-time jobs, but still work part-time, the real total unemployment rate leaps to 16.7%.
If your organization is seeking candidates to recruit, please contact Elder Bill Harris at w.m.harris@att.net. It's possible that some of our own members could be a good fit for your opportunity. Thank you for keeping our Career Transitions Ministry and the lives it touches in your prayers. For more information, or how to be involved with this ministry, please contact Bill Harris. |
