Ollie's Offerings

At the end of last year the Session aproved some significant revisions to our "APC Child and Youth Safety Policy."  In addition to clarifying definitions of "emotional, physical and sexual abuse" the revised policy creates a "Crisis Inquiry Committee."  Should there ever be an allegation of abuse involving youth or children at an APC-sponsored event, this committee will be called to investigate and render a decision as to whether any abuse has occurred or not.  If so, legal authorities will be immediately notified.

It is Session's intent that  this important committee be composed of APC members from specific professions: legal, educational and couseling.   The committee will be composed of three persons.  Our nominating committee will soon begin the work of soliciting and identifying names in order to recommend a committee to the session for approval.  Elder Kelly Vandever is the chairperson and Elder Dave Hadley the vice-chair of our Nominating Committee.  If you have a name to suggest please let Kelly, Dave, or me know.  We all hope the services of the Crisis Inquiry Committee will never be needed.  However, we also recognize that to protect children, youth and the adults working with them in supervisory roles, it is a necessary addition to our policy.

A copy of the revised safety policy is available on the table in the lobby, from any staff member and on the APC Website (hit the "document library" link).   Safety training sessions for all teachers and youth leaders continue to be held throughout the year so that each of our adult leaders is educated in abuse-prevention and child safety.  I will also be leading an education session at the adult program of our next Fun Wednesday program from 6:15-7:00pm on February 16 in the sanctuary.  We will overview the policy and discuss its importance and practice in the life of our congregation.

Let us all join together in intention and practice to make the church a place of welcome, safety and blessing for the hundreds of preschoolers, children and youth who are a part of our Christ-centered family.

Friends & Fellowship
Join us for a Friends & Fellowship Reception after the 11:00 service this Sunday.  The deacons are hosting this time for both visitors and members.  Come take a moment and say hello to friends you already know and meet some new ones!

 Church Library

Our Church Library will be having an Open House on Sunday, February 27 from 8:00AM until 12 Noon. Karen Moore and Ellenor Harps will be there to show you around and assist you in using the available resources. Disciple students, parents and anyone looking for inspiration and support may find this especially helpful. Coffee and light refreshments will be served. Please stop by and check it out! The church library is located on the second floor of the original building right across from the theater.

Elder Care Support

The February Elder Care meeting will take place Thursday, February 17 at 6:30pm in Fellowship Hall.  We are pleased to announce that both pastors, Dr. Oliver Wagner and Rev. Jamie Butcher, will be our speakers this month.  Dr. Wagner will discuss APC's new Memorial Garden. Our garden is a beautiful spot; a place for remembrance, thanksgiving, prayer, reflection and worship.  It may also be the place which meets your family's needs for interment of ash remains.  Rev. Butcher will address the details of advanced directives and other documents about which you may have questions.  We hope you will join us. For questions or other information, please contact Ellen Adolph, 678-637-2928 or hbunnies@gmail.com.

Michael O'Neal Chamber Singers

The Michael O'Neal Chamber Singers will present a choral concert here at APC on Sunday, February 13 at 3:00 pm.  Entitled "Gloria: Expressions of Joy", the program is based on different settings of the "Gloria" text.  The music is the expression of almost indescribable religious joy, bringing to mind such terms as rapture, ecstasy and exhilaration. The program will feature the 20th century French composer Francis Poulenc's exuberant and jazzy Gloria, as well as many other choral declarations of joy and praise.  $10 general admission at the door.

Men's Softball

Spring Softball - This year, February 14th has multiple meanings in addition to that all important Valentine's Day holiday. It's also the day that pitchers and catchers for the Atlanta Braves report to Spring Training AND, it's the deadline for signing up for the APC men's softball team. The season begins the week of February 28 and we play at Alpharetta North Park so if you are interested, send an e-mail to David Neal at dkn183@comcast.net before February 14. The estimated cost will be $40 for Alpharetta city residents and $65 for non-residents (final cost TBD once the final roster is complete).  So find your mitts, loosen up that throwing shoulder and get ready to play some softball.

Faith and Families Class

Faith and Families Aging Parent Study - The new Faith and Families Study "Relationships Between Aging Parents and Adult Children" begins Sunday, February 13, at 9:45AM in the multipurpose room.  We welcome anyone with an interest in this topic.  Please contact Allison Neal, 770-751-0260, alli-neal@comcast.net if you have any questions or need additional information

The "Faith and Families" Adult Sunday School class will be hosting a 4-week series called "The Marriage Journey: a journey towards mutual love, respect and understanding" in the multipurpose room from 9:45-10:45am every Sunday in March.  This class is for those who have been on the marriage journey for a brief time or a long sojourn. The class is also designed for those who are contemplating making this journey at some point in their future.  Over the four weeks we will cover:

Mapping the way ahead. Taking the road less traveled or the one that's familiar?

  • Signs to watch for: Slow down, Curves Ahead; Bump; Yield; Watch out for Children; Road Work Ahead; etc.
  • When it's time to stop for refreshment or to ask for directions!
  • How to know when you've arrived.

This March Sunday School series will be led by Dr. Deborah Silver who is an Episcopal Priest and an AAPC Certified Clinical Fellow with the American Association of Pastoral Counselors. Deborah is a seasoned therapist with over 25 years of counseling experience in individual, marriage and family therapy, and  systems theory. She has been on her own marriage journey for over 20 years.

Promise Class

Promise Class Volunteers Needed - Volunteers are needed to assist the Promise Class teachers at 11:00 AM Sundays.  We need two volunteers for each Sunday now to May.  Our Promise Class provides a safe and welcoming place for special needs children and youth. This allows their parents and siblings to fully participate in the life of our church including worship. As a volunteer, you are NOT responsible for the curriculum or activities. No special experience is required; just the ability to love children.  Sign-up using this online link: alpharettapres.com/Google or by contacting Sydney Schneider 770-664-0942 or sydschneider@comcast.net.

Career Transition
APC Career Transition Program - With Metro Atlanta's unemployment rate still hovering around 10%, many members and friends of APC find themselves unemployed or underemployed.

At the Group Meeting held on Wednesday, February 2, interest was expressed in learning more about Six Sigma, which might gave our members in job transition a more competitive edge.

We would appreciate one or more of our members, who are familiar with this program, volunteering to lead a discussion of Six Sigma, so that APC members in the career transition program would gain additional insights into how this program could enhance their competitiveness in this job market. Please contact Elder Bill Harris at w.m.harris@att.net, who can arrange a mutually convenient meeting time.
