Ollie's Offerings
The Session is going on retreat this weekend at St. Luke's Presbyterian Church in Dunwoody. In addition to some needed planning for 2011, we will have time for worship, education and fellowship. Rev. Penny Hill, our congregational consultant from the Presbytery of Atlanta, will be with us to share about her new assignment with us and the Presbytery's reorganization and new mission strategy. As we did at our Session 2010 retreat, we intend to develop some 2011 goals. Once embraced, those goals will be shared with you. I invite your prayers for our Session as we meet on Saturday.
This weekend we will also begin a New Member Class. Several church leaders will join Jamie and me in the process of welcoming new members into our fellowship and educating them about their responsibilities as members. This class will conclude with joining Sunday on February 20.
Such a weekend affords us all the opportunity to ask, "what is the mission of the church?" And "what are the responsibilities of church members?" Thank you for asking! Here is how our Presbyterian tradition answers those questions in our denomination's Constitution:
"The Church is called to be a sign in and for the world of the new reality which God has made available to people in Jesus Christ. The Church is the body of Christ and is called to tell the good news of salvation, celebrate the sacraments, call people to repentance and discipleship, be Christ's faithful evangelist and undertake his mission in the world."
"Faithful members accept Christ's call to be involved responsibly in the ministry of his Church. This involvement includes: proclaiming the good news, taking part in the life and worship of a congregation, praying and reading Scripture, giving money, time and talents to support the church's work, live responsibly in all areas of life and work for peace, justice and freedom in the world."
God help us all to discern and answer the call!

Souper Bowl of Caring
This Sunday, February 6, our youth will be collecting monetary donations after the 8:30 and 11:00 services as part of the Souper Bowl of Caring movement. Each year this activity unites youth organizations across the nation while teaching young people they can make a difference by helping others. This year's goal is to collect $11million in support for hunger -relief organizations throughout our nation. Our youth listened to guest speaker Barbara Duffy, Director of North Fulton Community Charities, during Youth Group on Sunday, January 30 and learned about NFCC's vital ministry within our own community. APC Youth will donate all proceeds to NFCC. Cash or checks (made out to APC for "Souper Bowl of Caring") will be gratefully accepted in our soup pots! Thank you.

Drake House Thank You
The Drake House extends heartfelt appreciation to all of the talented chefs and donors who contributed to and prepared the meal on Monday, January 31. Each Monday night the families residing at The Drake House come across the street to The Drake Center for a Life Skills Class. A warm and lovingly assembled meal awaits them before the children begin tutoring, the teens enter their life skills class and the moms begin their class. The infants and preschoolers are cared for by volunteers and also enjoy the dinner, if able. We are very thankful for Alpharetta Presbyterian Church for volunteering to help with the meal this week. It was evident that lots of time and effort went into planning and preparing the food, and it was enjoyed by all. Christy Merritt Director of Programs The Drake House

Adult Sunday School
Last week for Adult Sunday School Mini-Series! Some stories in the Bible get more "air-time" than others: we drew pictures about them as kids, we sang songs about them in Sunday School classes, and we heard sermons on them throughout our lives. The class meets in the theater beginning at 9:45 AM. Sunday, February 6 Jesus Calms the Wind & the Waves (Mark 4:35-41)

Career Transition
APC Career Transition Program - With Metro Atlanta's unemployment rate still hovering around 10%, many members and friends of APC find themselves unemployed or underemployed. When those who have given up are no longer job hunting, as well as those who want full-time jobs, but still work part-time, the real total unemployment rate leaps to 16.7%.
If your organization is seeking candidates to recruit, please contact Elder Bill Harris at w.m.harris@att.net. It's possible that some of our own members could be a good fit for your opportunity. Thank you for keeping our Career Transitions Ministry and the lives it touches in your prayers. For more information, or how to be involved with this ministry, please contact Bill Harris. |
