Ollie's Offerings
There is nothing quite so inviting as a clean blackboard. Okay, I date myself. Perhaps I should say there is nothing so inviting as a blank word document on the computer screen or perhaps as hitting the "open" button on the inbox of a text message of your cell phone. In any case (I still confess to getting excited when I go to fetch the US mail) there is much possibility before us. Each day is God's gift to us, each moment an opportunity or invitation to act in faith. Though rapidly filling, the 2011 year is not yet full. There is much that will and can be accomplished.
In about 5th grade I would call my friends and say, "what do you want to do?" That's the question I'm asking you now.
As you make plans and chart a course, as you develop goals and respond to issues that arise in your life and in the world (and as the church does the same) perhaps the words which Jesus chose to describe the beginning of his ministry will be helpful for our reflection. After all, where he leads we are called to follow. Pursue that which is kind and true; that which is timely and lasting; that which contributes to the peace and reconciliation of the world.
Luke 4 tells us, "Jesus unrolled the scroll and found the place were it is written, 'The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor'."
In many ways those words told people his purpose and direction. Blessings on you and the church as we seek to faithfully follow that lead. |

Dinner for Drake House
The Drake House mission is to provide short term crisis housing, assessment, support, and empowerment to homeless mothers and their children in the North Fulton area. The Drake House provides life skills classes to the residents. Families often arrive for the classes directly from work and school. The provision of dinner for their family relieves stress and ensures that the family receives dinner and makes it to the workshop in a timely manner. APC has volunteered to provide dinner on Monday, January 31. We will be delivering meatloaf, potato casserole, green salad, fresh fruit, rolls and bottled water. We will need food for 45 people. There is a sign-up sheet with full information on the Mission bulletin board directly across from Fellowship Hall. If you have questions, call Sue White at 770-772-4667 or Sheryl Wentworth at 770-777-1229. |

Promise Class
Promise Class Volunteers Needed - Volunteers are needed to assist the Promise Class teachers at 11:00 AM Sundays. We need volunteers for each Sunday now through May. Our Promise Class provides a safe and welcoming place for special needs children and youth. This allows their parents and siblings to fully participate in the life of our church including worship. As a volunteer, you are NOT responsible for the curriculum or activities. No special experience is required; just the ability to love children. Signup by contacting Sydney Schneider 770-664-0942 or sydschneider@comcast.net.

Adult Sunday School
Adult Sunday School Mini-Series now in progress! Some stories in the Bible get more "air-time" than others: we drew pictures about them as kids, we sang songs about them in Sunday School classes, and we heard sermons on them throughout our lives. So familiar are these stories that we no longer wonder what they are about or how they relate to our lives of faith. In this 4-part mini-series, we will revisit some of the most well-known stories of the Bible with the hope of bringing to light some fresh perspectives on these familiar stories. The series will be led by Ryan Bonfiglio (the Rev. Jamie Butcher's husband) who is completing his Ph.D. in Old Testament and Hebrew studies at Emory University. The classes will meet in the theater beginning at 9:45 AM. Sunday, January 23 The Tower of Babel (Gen 11:1-9) Sunday, January 30 The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:1-32) Sunday, February 6 Jesus Calms the Wind & the Waves (Mark 4:35-41)

Career Transition
APC Career Transition Program - With Metro Atlanta's unemployment rate still hovering around 10%, many members and friends of APC find themselves unemployed or underemployed. When those who have given up are no longer job hunting, as well as those who want full-time jobs, but still work part-time, the real total unemployment rate leaps to 16.7%.
If your organization is seeking candidates to recruit, please contact Elder Bill Harris at w.m.harris@att.net. It's possible that some of our own members could be a good fit for your opportunity. Thank you for keeping our Career Transitions Ministry and the lives it touches in your prayers. For more information, or how to be involved with this ministry, please contact Bill Harris. |
