Ollie's Offerings
There is an old practice in Scotland regarding New Year's Eve. Neighbors take some peet and venture out to see their friends. All doors are open and homes filled with laughter, food and a warm fire. Visitors leave enough peet to keep the fire going and venture on to the next home. "Hogmanay" (Happy New Year) they say as they journey from home to home.
Keep in mind that the earliest Protestant Reformers in Scotland dropped even "Christ's Mass" from the church calendar. They considered that holiday too Roman for their tastes. In its place, the New Year's holiday took on far greater importance. Christmas has survived that early purging, but many a Scot today still elevate the New Year's holiday as a time for deep reflection, remembance and anticipation. After our year in Glasgow twenty years ago, Heather and I still get phone calls from Scottish friends at New Year's.
Now is a good time to put some things in your past that you might live into the future God is preparing. Alfred Lord Tennyson's 1850 poem,
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky, The flying cloud, the frosty light;
The year is dying in the night; Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.
Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true.
As the new year begins, remember the words of the great Apostle who wrote,
Salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is almost gone, and the day is at hand. Let us therefore lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light." Romans 13:11-12
Happy New Year. Hogmanay! May it hold countless blessings for you and yours.

Adult Sunday School
Don't miss the Adult Sunday School Mini-Series that starts January 16! Some stories in the Bible get more "air-time" than others: we drew pictures about them as kids, we sang songs about them in Sunday School classes, and we heard sermons on them throughout our lives. So familiar are these stories that we no longer wonder what they are about or how they relate to our lives of faith. In this 4-part mini-series, we will revisit some of the most well-known stories of the Bible with the hope of bringing to light some fresh perspectives on these familiar stories. The series will be led by Ryan Bonfiglio (the Rev. Jamie Butcher's husband) who is now completing his Ph.D. in Old Testament and Hebrew studies at Emory Theological Seminary. The classes will meet in the theater beginning at 9:45 AM. Sunday, January 16 Noah and the Ark (Gen 6:11-9:17) Sunday, January 23 The Tower of Babel (Gen 11:1-9) Sunday, January 30 The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:1-32) Sunday, February 6 Jesus Calms the Wind & the Waves (Mark 4:35-41)
