On Sunday, September 16, Gregory V. Palmer was officially installed as Bishop of the Ohio West Area, the Episcopal area to which the West Ohio Conference belongs.
The service was attended by over 400 friends, family, West Ohio constituents, church and ecumenical leaders, as well as watched via live stream from places as far away as Japan. Special guests included the Otterbein University Gospel Choir and Humble Dance Ministries. A video of the entire service is available on our West Ohio YouTube channel, and embedded below. | 200th Anniversary Video | Join us in celebration of the first session of the Ohio Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Broad Street United Methodist Church on Saturday and Sunday, September 22-23. Potluck supper followed by a presentation of the historical background and setting of the conference and an appearance by James Quinn (Circuit Rider) as portrayed by Rev. David Maze. 20-20-20-20 Van Project | Joseph Bishman, Shawnee Valley District Superintendent, Bishop Bruce Ough, and Gil Hanke, General Secretary of the General Commission of United Methodist Men, have launched a project to purchase a van for use by United Methodist pastors in Vietnam - The 20-20-20-20 Van Plan. Twenty United Methodist Conferences are needed to have twenty United Methodist churches with twenty men to contribute twenty dollars each. West Ohio Conference United Methodist Men (WOCUMM) only need 18 more churches to join the project. Seeking help to end "massive human rights violations" | A delegation from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is in the US seeking help to end human rights violations associated with two decades of invasions by Rwanda. United Methodist Bishop Ntambo Nkulu Ntanda of the North Katanga Area is a member of the 30-person delegation consisting of religious and civil society organizations. The delegation presented a petition for peace, dialogue and reconciliation to the United Nations Security Council last week and is making calls on members of Congress and at the White House this week. Disaster Response Volunteers Needed | Families affected by the March tornado system that went through Holton, Indiana are in need of volunteers to assist with rebuilds. The Long Term Recovery Committee in Holton, Indiana is working on a combination of rebuilds (8 from the ground up) and rehabs. Darin Kroger, the construction manager, is asking for skilled labor; electricians and carpenters willing to donate time during the month of October. Breakfast honored 2011 church giving | The Annual UMCH Family Services Appreciation Breakfast was held June 11 to honor churches that had given so generously throughout 2011. Held during the West Ohio Annual Conference at Lakeside, certificates of appreciation honoring 172 churches were awarded. Sean Reilly, executive director of UMCH Family Services, spoke of the future direction of the child caring organization. More than 700 children were adopted, seen in their homes by clinicians, or treated in the Foster Care program. [UMCH Family Services Update] |
Slavery in the 21st century | John Wesley called 'Human Trafficking' the 'scandal of religion' more than 2 centuries ago. The "Slavery Abolition Act of 1833" may have been a successful ending to William Wilberforce's cause because the legislation did away with slavery throughout most of the British Empire. We know, however, that his fight is one we are still engaged in today. Let the facts be clear: What we now call "human trafficking" is nothing more than modern-day slavery. [more] |
ERT Recertification Class offered |
The West Ohio Conference will be offering an Early Response Team (ERT) Recertification class Saturday, September 29. This class is intended for those who possess an UMCOR badge that has either already expired or is about to expire. Badges are issued for a 3 year period of time. If you took your initial ERT class in 2009 or early 2010 and are interested in continuing to participate in our Early Response Team ministry, please consider registering.

Anti-poverty summit October 7-8 | United Methodist Advocacy in Pennsylvania's third anti-poverty summit will be Oct. 7-8 at Camp Hill United Methodist Church. Rev. Mike Slaughter, a leader in the growing missional church movement in The United Methodist Church and beyond, will be part of the summit's Town Meeting on Faith-Centered Advocacy on Monday, October 8. In his book, Change the World, he says, "The business of the church is to engage and empower disciples of Jesus in meeting the needs and closing the gaps of disparities for the least of these."
