On Scout Sunday in February, the West Ohio Committee on Scouting, under the action of the Office of Civic Youth-Serving Agencies/Scouting of the General Commission of the United Methodist Men,  presented the Bishops Award of Excellence to the Summit Station United Methodist Church in the Capitol Area South district. This award is given to recognize congregations who create a faith based environment for children, youth, their families and leaders to participate in various scouting agencies.  Other awards are available with application information found at Leader Resources:

  • Torch Award - adult scouting/youth leader award for service at the conference level
  • Cross and Flame Award recognizes adult leaders who have given exceptional service in the use and promotion of the Scouting Program for young people in The United Methodist Church
  • Good Samaritan Award - honors youth who demonstrate the attributes of the Good Samaritan
  • The Aldersgate Award - for distinguished service to youth (unique to West Ohio) [brochure]

Certification offered for college ministry
Certification for collegiate ministry will lift up best practices with a vital ministry that differs in key ways from local church work, according to campus ministers, agency staff, and seminary administrators. The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry's Board of Directors approved a certification track for certifying those working in collegiate ministries and several United Methodist theological schools are already working on course offerings that will fulfill the educational requirements.  [more]
2012 Liberty Bell Award
The Dayton Bar Association has awarded Dr. Sherry Gale the 2012 Liberty Bell Award at the Law Day USA ceremony. This award is presented annually to one citizen who has rendered outstanding service to the community. Dr. Gale is the Pastor of Grace Church in Dayton as serves as Vice President of the Board of Trustees of the Wesley Community Center.
National organization recognizes West Ohio Parish Nurse

For the first time, the Health Ministry Association has recognized an outstanding  individual who exemplifies faith community nursing and has achieved success in implementing a practice that is faith centered, community driven and wholistic in its approach toward health promotion, disease prevention and spiritually integrated.  Mary Ann Stone, a West Ohio Certified Lay Minister and Minister for Pastoral Care and Health Ministries at Bellbrook UMC, has received the Granger Westberg Leadership in Faith Community Nursing Award. Mary Ann is helping  lead the Parish Health Ministry workshop at annual conference in June.

Stories of Hope: Wonderful Wednesdays at Union Furnace UMC
Wonderful Wednesdays, a dynamic program for school age children from elementary through high school, is held at Union Furnace UMC in the Foothills District. Approximately 100 children are registered for the after-school program which includes a hot meal, special projects, homework time, choir and handbell practice and bible study. The program has provided food baskets and Christmas gifts for disadvantaged families and items for senior members of the church.
