April 30 daily wrap-up at General Conference

GC2012 Morning WorshipAfter a day of non-legislative activities, delegates to the United Methodist General Conference returned to the Tampa Convention Center April 30 to begin five days of processing some of the 1,200 petitions that wove their way through legislative committees.

On Sunday, delegates, staff and visitors attended neighboring churches, and hundreds attended a convention center service celebrating 40 years of the Commission on the Status and Role of Women.

Sunday evening delegates and visitors also gathered for an Africana Dinner sponsored by Black Methodists for Church Renewal. In an address, Sierra Leone Bishop John Yambasu, said "When we all get to heaven, there will only be one question asked of us. It will be, 'Did you spend your time on earth making it a better place?'"

After the dinner, delegates returned to the convention center for a three-hour celebration of a variety of United Methodist ministries, including the 20th anniversary of Communities of Shalom, the 40th anniversary of the Commission on the Status and Role of Women and the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts.

Expect to see proposals to consolidate United Methodist general agencies come before the 2012 General Conference floor this week. Proponents of the Call to Action and Methodist Federation for Social Action plans - the only two that were submitted officially - can still bring their original legislation as it was printed in the Advance Daily Christian Advocate to the floor to be debated and amended, said the Rev. Alan Morrison, General Conference business manager. Supporters of the Plan B legislation could still make a motion to the plenary session to substitute their legislation for the others. [story]
GC2012: Set-aside bishop proposal fails
Floor Debate

Carlos S. Cao of the Philippines speaks to the issue of a set-aside  bishop during floor debate at the 2012 United Methodist General  Conference in Tampa, Fla. A UMNS photo by John C. Goodwin.

The General Conference on April 30 decided not to approve a petition that would have created a new full-time role for the president of the United Methodist Council of Bishops. Calendar item 219, Petition 20314, received a simple majority of 55.12 percent of the vote in favor, but it fell short of the two-thirds total required to pass because it dealt with a paragraph of the denomination's constitution. The petition stated that the council "may elect from its active membership a full-time president" who also would "be relieved from residential responsibilities" while in that office. [story]
