National Clergy Appreciation Day - October 9, 2011

clergyapprWhile the entire month of October is Clergy Appreciation Month, National Clergy Appreciation Day is October 9, recognized annually on the second Sunday of October. This time is set aside for congregations to commit to praying for and encouraging our ministers on a regular basis. We owe a debt of gratitude to our pastors for giving their time and energy to help us in times of crisis and suffering, and being available to counsel and guide. Our pastors are on the front lines to defend our faith and our families, efforts that should not go unrecognized or unappreciated.

What do you have planned for your pastor?

Mission Partner Orphanage in Financial Crisis

mporphIn the Democratic Republic of the Congo, many children have been left parentless because of diseases like malaria, typhoid, and HIV/AIDS. In the Congo's North Katanga Conference of The United Methodist Church, many of these children are cared for at the Kamina Children's Home. Without food, shelter and education provided by the orphanage, these children would have little hope for the future. Today, however, the Kamina Children's home stands on the brink of a financial crisis. According to North Katanga's Bishop Ntambo, the children's home simply does not have enough money to cover the expenses for each child in the coming months.  Find Out More

4Corners: The Widow & the Orphan

widowsorphOn few issues is God's Word more explicit than on the treatment of the poor and vulnerable among us. Verse after verse in both the Old and New Testaments admonish God's people to care for those who cannot care for themselves. In his time on earth, Jesus certainly mirrored God's compassion by healing the sick and the lame, both physically and spiritually. The four Mission Partners of the West Ohio Conference-Congo, Mexico, Russia and Southeast Asia-have discovered unique and meaningful ways of ministering to the poor in their midst. In many cases, the poor are the Church, allowing for authentic partnership between church leaders and those whom they serve. Many of these churches even train and send out missionaries to other parts of the country or the world! The Church in the West would do well to learn from these brothers and sisters the meaning of ministry with-and not for-the poor. To read more, click here
