Greetings!

On September 16, devastating tornados and gale-force winds ripped through SE Ohio along a path from Nelsonville through Athens, nearly reaching the Ohio River Valley. People in our communities have experienced damage or destruction of private property, as well as fear and anxiety for their livelihoods and homes. The United Methodist Church is and will continue to respond. Letter from Bishop Ough

Is "Winging it" your style of project leadership?
B.J. Brengartner was given a project, and at the time, had absolutely no idea how to how to do the project. Totally unprepared for project leadership for most of her adult life, "winging it" became her hallmark and battle cry. Then she learned about the Nehemiah Leadership Training classes. B.J. signed up and never looked back. Read her story.
Diverse leaders to discuss conflict Saturday at UTS
This Saturday, join other West Ohio United Methodist colleagues and a community of Wesleyan scholars, Lutheran, Episcopal, and evangelical leaders in considering how we, as a diverse theological community, can stay at the table together. What unites us in mission? How do we deal with diversity of thought and practice?  What sort of leadership is required of us in such a time?  [Read more and register
Templo Aleluya serves some of the poorest people in Mexico - by Sabina Mascetti
As I write this, I still have the polish on my fingernails from my trip to Mexico. I vowed to not take it off so that every time I looked at it, I would be reminded of what I experienced. Templo Aleluya made a lasting impression on my life.

Imagine a place where the people are so committed and passionate to serve the children, who come there each day, with little to nothing to do with it. Click here for full story.

Ostrander UMC "Imagines No Malaria"
On Sunday, September 19, Ostrander UMC hosted Church & Community Worker Mariellyn Dunlap, who gave a presentation about "Imagine No Malaria," reminding church members that a gift of just $10 can save the life of a child in Africa by providing him or her with a mosquito net.

Every month, Ostrander is focusing on a different mission opportunity, either local or global. In August, church members learned about the United Methodist Children's Home in Worthington, and in October the focus will be on a local food pantry in Delaware. [more]
New refugee family at Worthington UMC
The second refugee family from Iraq arrived in Worthington late July. The parents were accompanied by their five children, ages 4 through 13, and a large number of suitcases. Several members of the church and our associate pastor met them at the airport and took them to their new apartment: a two-bedroom townhouse fully furnished and stocked with food. [read more]
Work with Muslims opens "new world"

Sarah Brockus, a member of St. Paul and St. Andrew United Methodist Church in lower Manhattan, has worked closely with two organizers of the Islamic community center and mosque two blocks from ground zero.

In a commentary, Brockus shares her experiences with Imam Feisal Rauf and his wife, Daisy Khan. [more]

African churches desire equal voice

PREAAfrican United Methodists desire a greater voice, more sharing of power and the ability to adapt some church rules to local contexts.
And a study committee exploring the global nature of the denomination is listening.

The committee studying the global nature of the church visited Africa in August as part of its mission to hear representative voices throughout the denomination before it makes its recommendations to the 2012 General Conference, the church's top legislative body. [more]

Reclaiming lay leadership key to revival

The United Methodist Church can experience revival by returning to the spiritual practices of Methodism's early years, say two scholars leading an effort to develop passionate lay leaders.

In the 18th century, Methodist preachers took to the road to share the gospel and Methodist laypeople gathered each week for class meetings to discuss the state of their souls. Often the class leaders - rather than ordained clergy - performed pastoral duties for their communities. [more]

25,000 pack Zimbabwe revivals

They come by the thousands, many leaving their homes for nearly a week to gather on an open patch of ground. The gatherings are a time of miracles and spiritual renewal, a pastor says.

Those who want to understand why The United Methodist Church in Africa is growing need only attend one of these five-day women's revivals held throughout Zimbabwe in August. [more]

Superior Court rules in favor of General Board of Church and Society

A Superior Court Judge has ruled in favor of the United Methodist General Board of Church & Society (GBCS) concluding that funds given in the early 20th century to construct the United Methodist Building on Capitol Hill were not intended for work only in the areas of temperance and alcohol.

"Judge Reid Winston's ruling confirms the good intentions of our many board members through several decades to witness on Capitol Hill in Christ's name for justice and peace," GBCS President Bishop Deborah Kiesey said. "The ruling underscores that we and our predecessors have been very faithful in our fiduciary responsibilities. It also validates the excellent legal advice we have received."  [more]
