Deepwater Horizon oil spill survey for clergy | The Center for the Study of Information and Religion (CSIR), Kent State University, is conducting research regarding how clergy members around the country addressed the Deepwater Horizon oil spill incident in the Gulf of Mexico in their sermons. Findings will be presented in December 2010. CSIR encourages clergy members to take an online anonymous survey. To participate, send an email to Dr. Daniel Roland referencing the research project. You will receive a link to the survey. |
U.S. urged to adopt rules to stop prison rape | The United Methodist Board of Church and Society joined with a coalition of religious, political, human rights and civil rights groups to send a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder urging him to adopt prison rape elimination standards. The Prison Rape Elimination Act was adopted in 2003 and standards to guide corrections officials in preventing prison rapes were developed in 2009 and presented to the Department of Justice. Holder missed the June 2010 deadline to endorse the rules. [more] |

The Rev. Tom Carter, the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry's director of Endorsement and Pastoral Care, works with military chaplains and says Project Lazarus appears to be an excellent means of meeting the additional needs for counseling and support for military members and their families. Disaster Response Academy comes to NW Ohio | Disasters can be devastating to communities, creating fear and uncertainty. The church plays a critical role in the recovery of people, families and communities in the aftermath of a disaster. In order to be the loving hands and feet of Christ, we must first prepare ourselves. Leaders of downtown churches to share ideas | Leaders of United Methodist churches located in downtown metropolitan areas face the challenges of aging congregations, aging buildings and rapidly changing neighborhoods. The Downtown Church Network 2010, sponsored by the United Methodist Board of Discipleship, will give church leaders the chance to exchange ideas. The event for pastors and staff of downtown churches in cities of at least 100,000 people is scheduled for late September in Wichita, KS. [more]. |
Four UMC missionaries serve in West Ohio |
The United Methodist Church has four missionaries serving in West Ohio. Church & Community Workers (CCW's) are missionaries commissioned by the General Board of Global Ministries to work within the US. CCW's often serve among the poor and marginalized, taking the Church into the community and bringing the community into the Church. The West Ohio CCW's worrk in ministries at Community Development for All People and the Charitable Pharmacy of Central Ohio in Columbus, and Esperanza Viva ('Living Hope') Community Center near Dayton.[more].
