Saturday was a big day for the United Methodist Church in Vietnam, thanks in large part to the people of the West Ohio Conference and the General Board of Global Ministries. The new 7,800-square-foot United Methodist Center in Ho Chi Minh
Motorbikes ridden across Vietnam and gifted to local UM pastors.

City was dedicated during a three hour worship service led by West Ohio Bishop Bruce Ough. After the ceremony Ough flew to Hanoi to discuss formal recognition of The United Methodist Church with Vietnamese government officials. [more]
Rethink Poverty Event - May 1
Rethink Poverty 
The May 1st Rethink Poverty event offers people of all ages a whole day of opportunities and ways to get involved!
Learn & Serve Workshops & Service projects both morning and afternoon at 4 locations, led by visiting United Methodist Bishops Ntambo, Mutti, Sprague, Middleton.
Public Witness Walk downtown Columbus ending in a rally on the Columbus Statehouse Lawn.  Free light supper and T-shirts (while supplies last) for those who register.
Worship Service on Poverty & Immigration ..part of a four-part weekend preaching series on poverty by visiting United Methodist Bishops Palmer, Trimble, Dyck, Ntambo.
Our Love First Walk for Children & Poverty supports The United Methodist Children's Home in Columbus and Grace Children's Hospital in Haiti, two UM affiliated organizations devoted to working with children and families, many of whom live in poverty.

Camps offer team and confidence building tools
Scenic views and a comfortable setting are part of each West Ohio Camp & Retreat Center
West Ohio Retreats
The West Ohio Conference owns and operates three professional resources available for your church's use as a retreat, conference and team building center.
 
Camp Wesley, Camp Otterbein and Widewater Retreat Center each offer team building expertise through experiential leadership opportunities for church leadership teams, staff, youth & young adult and other groups. Each site includes:
 
High and low challenge obstacle courses build trust and confidence

Unique and beautiful facilities with meeting rooms, overnight accomodations, recreation areas
 
Low Challenge/Initiatives Course with a variety of elements/obstacles to be accomplished as a team. Camp Otterbein also offers a 13 element High Ropes Challenge Course with a 40' Climbing Tower and a Zipline Dismount.
 
Trained onsite staff to coach you in creative ways to grow into a stronger and more intentional team of leaders.

Charitable Pharmacy of Central Ohio received donation
donationOhioHealth, West Ohio Conference affiliated healthcare ministry, chose National Physicians Day in March to honor the physicians who work there by making a donation to the Charitable Pharmacy of Central Ohio. Rev. Keith Vesper and Lea Blackburn presented an $18,000 check to pharmacist Allan Zaenger and George Howard, Director of West Ohio Connectional Ministries. More than 60 patients have received pharmacy services through the Charitable Pharmacy since it's first day in February. Before the end of 2010, 900 county residents are expected to receive free medications from this West Ohio ministry partnership located at Livingston UMC.  [more]
Internship with Immigration and Criminal Justice Grassroots Coordination
GBCSThe Immigration and Criminal Justice Reform Grassroots Intern will assist the Director of Civil and Human Rights in many ways including the development of educational resources for United Methodists in the areas of immigration and criminal justice. These resources will be used to aid the mobilization of United Methodists for political advocacy. This internship is offered through the General Board of Church and Society, tasked with implementing the Social Principles, which contain stances taken on social and political issues by The United Methodist Church. A passion and commitment to immigration and criminal justice reform policies is essential.  [more]
United offering practical Ministry Courses this summer
certificationUnited Theological Seminary in Dayton is offering church professionals the opportunity to expand and deepen their ministry skills, with a series of courses designed to meet the needs of busy ordained and lay congregational staff members who are committed to excellence in their fields. The UMC Certification Program for church professionals is a program of the General Board of Higher Education Ministry (GBHEM) of the United Methodist Church. United offers a full scope and sequence of courses, so students can take all necessary classes for certification in Christian Education Ministry, Children's Ministry, Music Ministry, Older Adult Ministry, Spiritual Formation Ministry, and Youth Ministry.  Scholarships available.  [more]
Pastor from Texas to lead United Methodist Committee on Relief
charveyThe Rev. Cynthia Fierro Harvey, a pastor from Texas with a background in the local church, international health ministries, domestic disaster relief, and organizational management is the new head of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).  Harvey succeeds the Rev. Sam Dixon, who was killed in the earthquake that shook Haiti last January 12. Bishop Bruce R. Ough, president of Global Ministries, welcomed the choice of Harvey to lead UMCOR. [more]
Youth 2011 website offers glimpse of next year's National Youth Gathering
youth2011A website kicking off Youth 2011, next year's national youth gathering for the United Methodist Church, is now online with information and links about the quadrennial event sponsored by Young People's Ministries, a division of The General Board of Discipleship. For the first time, the four-day conference in July 2011 will be held twice on opposite sides of the country to better serve the denomination. [more]

VIM Team Leader Training, multiple locations; The sessions will include skills and information for being a team leader as well as ways to provide effective spiritual leadership, appropriate ways to share leadership and how to create a worshipful mission atmosphere. Led by experienced mission leaders, the West Ohio Conference Volunteers in Mission training is ready to assist you in learning the ins and outs of gathering a team for service in Ohio, in the US and around the world.
