Greetings!

The United Methodist Church will commission 31 missionaries and nine deaconesses and home missioners in an October 13 celebration that will be the first such service broadcast live on the internet from Stamford, Connecticut.

Commissioning Service

As president of the Board of Global Ministries, West Ohio's Bishop Bruce Ough will be participating. Also from West Ohio, Deborah Archie and Soraya Montano will be commissioned as Church and Community Workers; Kyung O. Yu as a deaconess.  Deborah is already at work with the Community Development for All People Corporation in Columbus. Advent devotions: What  do you hope for in the coming of Christ?
breadThe theme for this year's Society of St. Andrew's annual Advent devotions is "Prayers of Hope: What do you hope for in the coming of Christ?" SoSA, Advance #801600, is a national nonprofit hunger-relief ministry that distributes rescued food to agencies across the country at no cost. Gambling blastAs people of faith, we oppose predatory gambling because we know it always does more harm than good. We can be evangelists of Christ's love by helping to insure that gambling never comes into our state.

Actions for this week:
1. Talk with people about how gambling destroys people and communities. Your voice  matters!
2. Write a letter to the editor of your newspaper.

Go to www.westohioumc.org/nocasinos to find facts and information. Bishop Ough's press conference statement can also be found there. Click here to learn how gambling destroys people and communities.
"What in the world happened?"
sdyckWomen throughout the developing countries suffer and die from means that could be alleviated. There are overwhelming statistics on sex trafficking of girls; the high and growing maternal mortality rates in developing countries; the lack of education for girls, which influences poverty and the number of pregnancies that a girl will experience in her lifetime; and the violence inflicted upon women and girls in war-torn countries.Yet these stories are rarely told in church. Bishop Sally Dyck asks in her latest blog entry if we care about the precious lives of these children of God.  [Blog]
Interfaith Service of Remembrance and Hope
On Monday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. an Interfaith Service of Remembrance and Hope on behalf of health care reform will be held at Broad Street United Methodist Church, 501 E. Broad, Columbus. The service provides a setting for concerned people to come together across denominations and major faith traditions to:
  • Memorialize the 45,000 Americans who died this past year because lack of health insurance prevented the care that would have saved their lives.
  • Lift up those 45,000 who will die each year that we fail to bring about practices and processes that promote healing and health for all in our nation.
  • Pray together for the will and perseverance to bring about new ways of providing health care-starting in 2010 - that give life to all Americans, rather than casually and callously blotting it out.

Following the service, opportunities for discussion and action on behalf of health care reform will be available, along with light refreshments. Parking is available in the lots on Washington Street across from the church.
