Greetings!

Together We CanOur God-given mission is to make disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Methodism's founder John Wesley reminded us that we are called to step out of our little corner of the world to spread the good news, transform hopelessness into hope and help God's children wherever they may be.

No matter how or where we serve serve Jesus Christ, United Methodists do God's work in a unique structure referred to as "the connection." This concept has been central to the Methodist movement from its beginning and comes to life through our clergy appointment system, our mission and outreach, and through our collective giving.

Please join me and other conference and district leaders at the Together We Can event in your district.  Both clergy and lay persons will have a chance to be heard, ask questions about our connection and apportionment system, and receive information about the ministries our faithful stewardship supports and how that stewardship is making our churches stronger.

                                  Yours in Christ,
                                   Bishop Bruce R. Ough

Church developers learn from early evangelists
jwesleyCan Methodists learn anything about effective Christian evangelism from their denomination's founding period 250 years ago? "Yes," says a Duke University professor, who told 600 church developers how the Wesley brothers, John and Charles, gave rise to a movement that swept the young United States of America. "Early Methodism was evangelistic," the Rev. Laceye Warner explained to the 2009 United Methodist School of Congregational Development on July 30. [more]
Thousands join faith-based call on health care
healthcareA recent national conference call on faith-based health care reform attracted more than 140,000 listeners. The call launched a "40 Days for Health Reform" campaign to ask people of faith to press Congress to finish work on a health plan when lawmakers return after the Labor Day recess. The United Methodist Boards of Church and Society and Global Ministries were among the more than 30 religious denominations and organizations that sponsored the call.  [more]
United Methodists save one life in Uganda
ugandaThey're called "the invisible children" - a generation of young boys and girls in Uganda who were torn from their villages, brainwashed and used as pack animals and bullet fodder for the Lord's Resistance Army of Joseph Kony. A teen named Lazarus, who also calls himself Joe, lived amid these atrocities, and then on the streets, eating out of garbage pits, after escaping Kony's terrorist army. Only about a year ago did he let himself smile. [more]
Mission News
A UMVIM team from the North Central New York Conference made a mission trip to Mutambara Mission in Zimbabwe and was impressed by the need for materials there - school supplies as well as medical supplies. While they make plans and raise funds to send a container, they would like to "rent" space on any container going to Zimbabwe in the next 6 months. Email Sylvia Reimer or call 315-788-5442 or 315-778-5074.
