United Methodists must engage in ministries with the poor, tackle the diseases of poverty that limit life, health and wholeness, as well as develop principled Christian leaders for the church and the world, said Bishop Gregory Palmer, Bishop John Hopkins and Neil Alexander, publisher of the United Methodist Publishing House. Lenten initiatives focus on water |
Instead of "doing without" during Lent, Christians are being encouraged to think about what others in need can "do with" access to water resources. The Ecumenical Water Network has developed the "Seven Weeks for Water" initiative as a concrete way for congregations and denominational organizations to focus on water justice over the Lenten Period. The World Council of Churches, Church World Service and the All Africa Conference of Churches are members of the network's steering group. [more] |

Mental health awareness training for faith communities |
The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Ohio (NAMI Ohio) offers FREE Mental Health Awareness training for members of faith communities. Following this workshop, participants will be able to demonstrate a greater awareness and knowledge of mental illness; identify the role that the faith-based community must play in combating mental illness and stigma; understand the process of recovery and resiliency; and identify local resources available in the community to provide support and intervention. Specialized training is also available for African American audiences within the faith community. In this effort, NAMI Ohio partners with Tova's N.E.S.T., a statewide organization that primarily serves the faith community. Tova's N.E.S.T., which was inspired by an African American mother's unconditional love for her daughter who lives with mental illness, provides workshops that cover all of the topics identified above, while incorporating the importance of the African American family in diagnosing and treating mental health disorders. For more information or to arrange for a trainer to come to your place of worship, please contact Betsy Johnson.
