Community Center and Cooperative Parish Grants |
Grants totaling $130,000 were awarded recently by the West Ohio Let Justice Roll Lead Team. Funding comes from your local church apportionment dollars. "Community Centers and Cooperative Parishes throughout West Ohio make the gospel real in the lives of the poor and forgotten," said the Rev. Dee Stickley-Miner, director of Connectional Mission and Justice Ministries for West Ohio. "Through the extension of hope the giver and recipient become transformed and for a moment, distinctions that divide people become invisible" she continued. "Through the use of apportionment dollars, congregations across West Ohio participate in those moments of transformation." [2009 Community Center recipients] |
Lowery to give benediction at Obama inauguration |
The Rev. Joseph Lowery, 87, a retired UM pastor and stalwart of the civil rights movement, will give the benediction Jan. 20 at Barack Obama's inauguration as president of the United States. Card sale to benefit Russia orphanage Music and Art School |
The Russia Volga District Orphanage Music and Art School is a much needed outlet for talented children who would not be able to express their God-given talent otherwise. The OMAS's mission is to share the Word through artistic endeavors and give young artists forums to share their faith journeys. The West Ohio Conference is delighted to be able to sell cards with designs from actual students to help support the OMAS ministry. [Details] |
Wesley Theological Seminary Governor host "The People's Inaugural" |
On December 4, Wesley Board of Governors member Earl W. Stafford announced "The People's Inaugural", a realization of his long-held dream to throw a ball for the traditionally uninvited: the disadvantaged, the terminally ill, wounded soldiers, veterans and the homeless. His hope: "to bless those who otherwise wouldn't have an opportunity to be a part of the great celebration." His motivation: "Christ is at the center of this. There are a lot of people hurting...we need to get back to caring for one another." [Details] |
Kamina Children's Home update |
The Kamina's Children's Home has had a lot to celebrate recently! First, their clothes drive has been a rousing success. Final numbers have yet to come in, but the WOC really came forward and helped in a big way. Second, Stephanie Matthews, a professional photographer and Executive Director at the home, has created a traveling photography exhibit to share the Kamina experience with others. Many West Ohio Conference churches partner with the North Katanga conference (where Kamina is located) and this exhibit is a perfect way to put a tangible face on the abstractness of giving to missions. Please go to Kamina for pricing and questions about the exhibit. |

Grants as a source of funding for your congregation |
Pastors and ministry leaders are always asking whether grants are available to fund the work of their congregations, and this question is arising more during these difficult economic times. Congregations that are having a difficult time meeting budget with gifts from inside the congregation are increasingly looking to outside sources for help. So, is there grant funding out there for your church? [Full story] [Webinar] |
New Congress will have 53 United Methodists |
Fifty-three United Methodists will serve in the 111th Congress, a decline of eight from the last three Congresses, but the denomination still ranks third in total congressional membership. While there are seven newly elected United Methodists in the 111th Congress, compared to five in the 110th Congress, an unusual number of Methodist members retired, died in office or were defeated for re-election, resulting in the overall reduction.[Full story] [United Methodist members] |
