Mobile Medical Unit full of shoes and clothes is bound for Congo from West Ohio |
More than 700 pairs of shoes and 1,300 pounds of donated clothes are packed into the biggest gift the people of Katanga probably will ever see: a tractor-trailer converted into a doctor's office. United Methodist Affiliated OhioHealth donated its retired Wellness on Wheels vehicle to the United Methodist Church in Katanga, where rural residents don't have access to modern health care. Invitation to a reflection on immigration |
The General Board of Church and Society is holding a Day of Action for Immigration Rights January 21st in Washington D.C. Because not everyone can attend a rally, the West Ohio Conference invites all to a time of prayer and fasting as we discern what it means to be the witness of Jesus Christ to the people in our communities- both recent immigrants and those who have long lived in our midst but whom we do not know. Some suggested Biblical texts for reflection include: Luke 1:39-56; Luke 2:1-20; Luke 3:1-22; Luke 5:7-22; 1 Kings 17:7-24; Hebrews 13:2. | |

January 11 is "Human Trafficking Awareness Day" |
Following up on a resolution passed by the 2008 United Methodist General Conference, Sunday, Jan. 11, will be observed as "Human Trafficking Awareness Day." An estimated 700,000 to 4,000,000 people worldwide are trafficked each year, including 18,000 to 20,000 into the United States. The denomination is part of the Justice for Women's Working Group of the National Council of Churches, which has identified human trafficking as a priority issue for 2009. Local congregations can play a role in reversing the numbers of people being trafficked through education and action. The NCC has a downloadable bulletin insert for use on Jan. 11. |
Road trip planned for next generations |
Is your church big, small, old or new? Do you have 300, 30, or 3 youth? Then we want to be in ministry with you! Save Wednesday, January 14 to gain valuable and exciting information about "Road Trip" (a summer camping experience sponsored by Ohio River Valley churches.) Hosted by Forest Chapel UMC, this gathering is intended to provide information for those churches interested in mentoring the Next Generations of children and youth to be spiritual leaders for the WOC and beyond. "Road Trip" is a summer camping event held at Camp Wesley in Bellefontaine. Designed by leaders from the ORV district, the event includes optional transportation to and from the greater Cincinnati area, as well as scholarship opportunities. There are several roles you can fill: Camp Coordinators to publicize camp in your own church, collect and organize registration forms and money; Volunteer Counselors to spend the week at camp growing in relationship with youth; and others to pray for your campers. If you or someone you know may be interested in making this opportunity available for youth at your church, please consider attending the meeting on Wednesday, January 14, 7-8:30 p.m. at Forest Chapel UMC, 680 W Sharon Road, Cincinnati. Childcare and s'mores will be provided. RSVP to Amy Matzenbach. |
