Methodist Theological School in Ohio has opened its competition for the Harding Scholarship, offering full tuition plus a $10,000 annual stipend to a student entering in the fall of 2009. Phone Cards Still Helping Soldiers Remain Connected |
The people of The United Methodist Church have donated more than 13 million minutes of conversations with loved ones to those serving overseas. The Phone Card Project is five years old. With holidays coming up, these cards are vital. The Endorsing Agency developed a card with the United Methodist logo and a message stating that the card is provided by the people of The United Methodist Church, who are also praying for the safety of the troops. Bishops Adopt Guidelines for Granting Deacons Sacramental Authority |
The United Methodist Council of Bishops has approved guidelines for interpreting the circumstances for allowing deacons to administer Holy Communion and perform baptisms.The new sacramental authority for deacons-granted by the denomination's top legislative body at the 2008 General Conference-becomes effective in January. Each year, the General Board of Higher Education & Ministry awards scholarships and loans through the United Methodist Student Day offering to students attending United Methodist and other accredited colleges and universities. Otterbein Student Receives National Award Serving at UM Children's Home |
Two United Methodist affiliated institutions work together to make the world a better place for West Ohio children. Each week, Otterbein College students visit the United Methodist Children's Home and interact with the children. Recently, Otterbein College senior Chelsea Merriman was awarded the 2008 Spirit of LASSIE Award for her contributions to national service. Merriman leads United Methodist Children's Home service project at Otterbein and helped create an Agape Garden with the children this summer. New Book Offers Framework for Prison Ministry |
 A new book on United Methodist prison ministry suggests a holistic framework for ministry with the incarcerated, their families, and victims of crime. I Was in Prison: United Methodist Perspectives on Prison Ministry, published by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, will be the subject of a panel discussion at the 2008 Criminal Justice Summit at the Renaissance Hotel in Washington, D.C., in Nov. 20-22. Katie Bichsel, died suddenly November 7, 2008 in Burlington, VT. Katie was the granddaughter of Rev. Dr. Dale (retired) and Josephine Bichsel. Condolences will reach Dale and Jo Bichsel at 189 Willow Brook Way South, Delaware, OH 43015. Patricia (Pat) Watson, mother of Brent Watson, died November 14. Brent is the Assistant to the DS of the Foothills District. A memorial service will be held at Hilltop UMC (1930 W. Galbraith Rd., Cincinnati) at 11am on Saturday, November 29.
