FAIRLY TRADED CHOCOLATE IS A SWEET TREAT FOR HALLOWEEN 
 
Chocolate
Fairly traded chocolate is all treat and no trick for United Methodists wanting to put their faith into action this Halloween. The United Methodist Committee on Relief and the United Methodist Board of Church and Society are partnering with Equal Exchange, a Massachusetts-based cooperative operated on fair trade practices, to raise awareness about the topic this Oct. 31.

Reformation Day is a day set aside to recognize, remember, and celebrate the Protestant Reformation. In some countries, it is observed as an official holiday. It remembers Martin Luther and the central role he played in the reform movement that split the western church of Rome. 
 
BISHOP BRUCE OUGH IS NEW PRESIDENT OF MISSION AGENCY  
 
Bishop OughStamford, CT, October 13, 2008--Bishop Bruce R. Ough of West Ohio is the new president of the General Board of Global Ministries, the international mission agency of The United Methodist Church.
He was elected on October 13 by the board's directors meeting in Stamford, Connecticut, to organize their work for the next four years.
 
PASTORAL LETTER TO WEST OHIO METHODISTS
 
Today's payday lending practices are not just financially irresponsible; they are morally reprehensible. It is imperative that persons of faith who seek the common good for all of God's people work together to preserve the new payday lending reform law and stop those who charge 391 percent interest, just as Jesus once chased the moneychangers out of the temple (Mark 11:15-17 and Matthew 21:12-13).

2008 Twelfth Annual Legal Forum
- November 7, Ohio   Northern University, Ada, OH. Presented By The West Ohio Conference Board of Trustees and The Pettit College of Law of the Ohio Northern University. In addition to refreshments and lunch, each participant will receive a notebook of all handout materials, and a CD with all materials from the previous Legal Forums.

COMMENTARY: JOHN WESLEY'S ADVICE ON THE ECONOMY
 
The year was 1772 as John Wesley addressed a letter to the editor of Lloyd's Evening Post regarding the causes of and cures for high unemployment, food shortages and dismal economic conditions.

More than two centuries later, the United States is struggling with a meltdown on Wall Street, skyrocketing gas prices and inadequate health care. But our diminished economy would scarcely rival that of England in 1772.

CubaUMCOR LOBBIES TO PROVIDE CUBA STORM RELIEF
 
The United Methodist Committee on Relief has made some progress toward obtaining the U.S. Treasury Department licenses required to allow the denomination to assist hurricane survivors in Cuba. Numerous United Methodists have called for a response to the devastation caused by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike in Cuba in early September
