Habitat for Humanity ranked as a top 10 US Home Builder for the first time

As home builders across the US have been cutting back on new home construction throughout the current recession, Habitat for Humanity affiliates in the US have continued to expand their mission to bring the opportunity of home ownership to low income families. Announced today in a Wall Street Journal article, Habitat for Humanity is now ranked as the 8th largest home builder in the nation!

Here in Austin, we've been humbled by the ongoing support of our generous community, which enabled us to build 23 homes in 2008 and 24 homes in 2009. This year, for our 25th anniversary, we're on track to build 26 new homes! Throughout this time, we've also repaired over 50 homes and served hundreds of families with financial literacy and homeowner education courses.

It isn't every day that a simple idea, founded on a grassroots, community-supported non-profit vision of fighting poverty through the power of home ownership, makes it to a list like this. To each and every one of you who has made a donation, raised a hammer, or advocated for Austin Habitat ~ thank you for changing lives!

About Austin Habitat for Humanity
At Austin Habitat, we believe everyone deserves a simple, decent and affordable place to live. It changes everything. We know that together we can end the cycle of poverty. Together we can change lives.

We have served the Austin community since 1985, building more than 250 new affordable homes with hardworking low-income families. Homes are built with volunteer labor and community funding, and sold to our home buyers with zero-interest mortgage loans. Each home buyer participates in housing counseling programs and contributes approximately 400 hours of "sweat-equity."

You can change lives by giving at AustinHabitat.org.
