AUSTIN HYP
PRESS RELEASE
AUSTIN'S YOUNG PROFESSIONALS BUILD THE HYP TO BUILD A HOME

Despite tough economic times, Austin's future leaders continue to give their time, talents and resources to better their community

AUSTIN, Texas (April 7, 2009) - This spring, hundreds of Austin's most active, connected and caring young professionals will come together again to help in the ongoing crusade against poverty in Austin. The third annual Build the HYP (pronounced "hype") Gala will feature food and drink by a myriad of Austin's best restaurants, live music by Tres Latin Jazz Trio and a late night dance party with Austin's infamous DJ Manny.

Habitat Young Professionals (HYP) will host the event at One World Theatre, one of Austin's most unique and stunning venues featuring old world Spanish design and hill country sunset views. Past events were held at The Design Center of Austin and at the newly opened Long Center in 2008 and have entertained a combined 800-plus partygoers.

Proceeds will go toward giving a hardworking Austin family a chance to finally own a home.

In 2008, Austin HYP raised approximately $75,000 in its second-annual Build the HYP Gala. HYP's success is attributable to the generosity of community partners, whose donations of goods and services allowed HYP to keep event expenses to 10 cents on every dollar raised. The money raised was then used to build the world's first HYP house, and in an emotional October ceremony, HYP members and Austin Habitat volunteers dedicated the home to its ecstatic and deserving new owner. As a result of Austin HYP's community impact, many other Habitat for Humanity affiliates throughout the U.S. have started their own young professional groups.

"Habitat for Humanity is not a hand out, it's a hand up," says HYP's 2009 Chairwoman, Brooke Rogers. "Our partner families go through a rigorous application process, put in hundreds of hours of sweat equity and pay a mortgage, just like you and me."

Rogers also notes that Austin Habitat's community impact extends far beyond the building of a home.

"The residual effect of the stability that comes along with home ownership literally changes lives.  The effect of one family moving into their new home is tenfold.  Austin is one of the greatest cities in the world.  It gives us all so much.  It is our blessing, honor and responsibility to do everything we can to make it even better."

ABOUT AUSTIN HABITAT

At Austin Habitat, we believe everyone deserves a decent  place to live. Give someone a chance, and the whole world changes. Hope finds a home. A dream becomes reality. The fight begins. The end of poverty starts here. That's the power of home ownership.

We have served the Austin community since 1985, building more than 235 new affordable homes with low income families. Homes are built with volunteer labor and community funding, and sold to our home buyers with zero-interest mortgage loans. Each home buyer participates in financial education programs and contributes approximately 400 hours of "sweat-equity."
