Austin Habitat, Reytex Homes and city of Austin christen new partnership with triple-house dedication in Meadow Lake in southeast Austin

AUSTIN, Texas (January 23, 2009)
- On Saturday, January 24, 2009, at  10 a.m., Austin Habitat will celebrate its longstanding partnership with the city of Austin by dedicating three homes in the Meadow Lake subdivision in southeast Austin developed by Reytex Homes.

These three houses represent the chance to finally own a home for the Arzola, Contreras and Ruiz families. The families have completed nearly 400 hours of "sweat equity" building homes with Austin Habitat, in addition to 24 hours of housing counseling. The families purchase their homes with a zero-interest mortgage.

While every house dedication is special, this event signifies a new and exciting collaboration between Austin Habitat, the city of Austin and Reytex Homes.

The current housing market and strong relationships with the Austin Housing Finance Corporation and Reytex Homes allowed Austin Habitat the rare opportunity to purchase three new houses built by Reytex Homes.

This new partnership will play a key role in Austin Habitat's efforts to end the cycle of poverty in Austin through the power of home ownership.

Margaret Shaw, director of the City of Austin Neighborhood Housing and Community Development, says the city's relationship with Austin Habitat is an important part of providing affordable housing in Austin.

"The City of Austin's partnership with Austin Habitat for Humanity is so important because of the collaborative and innovative efforts that are necessary to be part of the solution for affordable home ownership opportunities for working families in Austin," Shaw says.

Brian Higgins, manager, Qualico U.S. Housing Operations, the Canadian-based parent company of Reytex Homes, agrees.

"It is easy to talk the talk about providing affordable housing, but our company believes in walking the walk," Higgins says.

"We think it is important to partner with organizations like the city of Austin and Habitat for Humanity to give people, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, the chance to own a home."

Higgins says this partnership is a logical extension of Qualico's relationship with Habitat for Humanity. Qualico has donated building materials and provided Habitat with opportunities to build in communities in Canada and the United States.

Austin Habitat and Reytex Homes are both currently building in the Austin's Colony community.
