Some Great News for 2012
New Swim Start Location

We have been working over the fall to improve the race!  First of all we have a new swim start for 2012. Instead of starting at the Ghost Lake Provincial Park, we will start from the boat ramp across the channel at Cottage Club. Why are we doing this?  Because:

- It is a beautiful location

- The swim start will now face west, so no more sun in your eyes as you search for the first turn buoys!

- We have a secured and gated community to keep your bikes safe.

- We have a paved surface - so no more gravel in T1!

Ghost Lake

We are so excited to have Cottage Club on board - it will make our already awesome swim venue even better!  Thanks Cottage Club!

Check out the Cottage Club Website!

We will update our swim course map shortly.

More Great News for 2012
Later Race Start Times  swimmers in Ghost Lake

One of the biggest complaints I hear about our race is the early race start time.  The reason we had to do this was because of the long traffic tie ups cause in the first year through Cochrane and elsewhere. Well no longer!  Our awesome race director Cheryl has convinced the Province of Alberta that this is no longer needed given the better traffic management we have been able to show in the last two years.

Race start times for 2012 will be the more common 6:45 am for Pros and 7:00 for the first age-group waves.  Sweet!  Thanks Cheryl!

Triathletes are looking at getting back to a regular routine of training.  So how do you best incorporate swim training into your next year's plans?  Here are some guidelines.

Importance of Flexibility in Swimming.....
swim flexibility
It seems that swimming technique is the most discussed aspect of swim training.  I think this often overshadows the importance of flexibility which trumps everything else.

Winter Training - Building the engine.....
 Kyle Marcotte, Pro Ironman
Kyle on the bike
If you are anything like me, you've already taken a short break from training and are eager to get back into some healthy living. This time of year shouldn't be for going out and setting personal bests in training or local races.  If you are preparing for the Calgary 70.3, you have lots of time before spring comes when you will start getting into race specific intensive training......

The Newbie Category

Ironman 70.3 Calgary is the only race in North America that has the popular Newbie category.  This categoryis  for Ironman 70.3 Virgins or other athletes who are intimidated by the distance and especially by open water swim starts. This category is open to all ages, it will be the last wave start  and will be heavily supported (especially during the swim) by enthusiastic  volunteers with morale and technical support.

It will have the same cut-off times as the other waves;
however, you will be able to relax and spend the day in a supportive environment and push each other to collectively reach your goal of finishing an Ironman 70.3.

Look for the Newbie Category when you register!
