Any big purchase can seem overwhelming, and purchasing hearing aids is no exception. Hearing aids are an investment which helps to improve communication and quality of life for many years. The process of finding the most appropriate hearing aid may seem stressful to some. Once a person considers hearing aids, they often find themselves asking for other people's opinions. Unfortunately, determining fact from fiction during this process may be even more difficult than finding the right hearing aid(s). Hopefully, the information provided here will help to clear up some of the myths about hearing loss and hearing aids.
MYTH: I CAN BUY HEARING AIDS ONLINE OR BY MAIL AND SAVE MONEY FACT: Counseling and follow-up is essential for success with hearing aids. When hearing aids are purchased online, there is no way to get the proper support and follow-up. Hearing aids need to be custom fit to the hearing loss of the user. There is no way for anyone to properly fit a hearing aid without in-person appointments with the patient. Purchasing aids this way is a set up for failure. This can end up being costly when the hearing aid doesn't work for you. MYTH: WHAT WORKS FOR MY FRIEND WILL WORK FOR ME FACT: What's right for one person is not necessarily right for you. Together, with your audiologist, you will determine the best amplification options for your needs. Due to differences in communication environments, hearing loss, and auditory processing, one cannot expect the same experience as someone else with the same hearing aid. The hearing aid process is very individualized.
MYTH: ONE HEARING AID IS JUST AS GOOD AS TWO, AND IT SAVES MONEY FACT: Any audiologist will agree; two ears are better than one. There are a few exceptions to this rule, but generally speaking, it is very important to wear two hearing aids when there is hearing loss in each ear. If cost is a big concern, it may be more appropriate to purchase two hearing aids with less advanced technology instead of one hearing aid with top of the line technology.
