The Consequences of Untreated Hearing Loss

One out of every 10 Americans has a hearing loss-that's more than 31,000,000 people!! While our ability to hear is so vitally important to everyday activities, many people choose not to receive treatment for their hearing loss. People who choose not to aid their loss have a laundry list of reasons of why they can continue to "get by". People often are in denial of their hearing problem, not wanting to accept something they perceive as a weakness. Sometimes they feel that wearing a hearing aid would make others perceive them as "old", while others feel that they can just keep compensating for their loss by turning up the volume of televisions, phones, and radios. No matter what the reason, research continues to show us that untreated hearing loss has far-reaching negative effects on many aspects of our lives. In short, it can have serious emotional and social consequences for people of any age. Some of the more common effects of untreated hearing loss are: *Irritability, Negativity and Anger *Fatigue, Tension, Stress, and Depression *Avoidance or Withdrawal from Social Situations *Social Rejection and Loneliness *Reduced Alertness and increased Risk of Personal Safety *Impaired Memory and ability to Learn New Tasks *Reduced Job Performance and Earning Power *Diminished Psychological and Overall Health
More and more, hearing loss is not just a problem for the elderly, as we see hearing loss occurring in all age ranges.
