Houston...We Have a Concert!
For an out-of-this-world concert experience, come to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for the Houston Symphony's The Planets-An HD Odyssey Sept. 30 at 8 p.m. Under the direction of Maestro Hans Graf, this multi-sensory concert experience features the Women of the Houston Symphony Chorus and a newly created HD film of planetary images paired with a live performance by the symphony. Tickets to travel the universe are $15 for orchestra seating. Mezzanine and lawn seating are free courtesy of Audi of America and Woodforest National Bank. Tickets are not required for free seating. Gates open at 7 p.m.
For this production, the Houston Symphony collaborated with NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and award-winning producer/director, Duncan Copp, to craft a film of the latest, high-definition planetary images that accompany a live performance of Gustav Holst's suite, "The Planets."
The beautiful and mystifying score by Holst is performed by the orchestra while the film is shown on a 24-foot screen above the stage. In addition to out-of-this-world imagery, the film opens with an introduction featuring interviews with JPL planetary scientists.
The program lifts off with Igor Stravinsky's "Feu d'artifice"
(Fireworks), Opus 4, then "Medea's Dance of Vengeance" by Samuel Barber, followed by Holst's "The Planets."
Before your voyage through space begins, make a stop in the North Plaza at 7 p.m. for pre-concert activities. Visit unique exhibits from Johnson Space Center in the House of Blues Hospitality Tent, including an Apollo EMU spacesuit, displays of the solar system and Earth, a shuttle extravehicular activity glove, space food samples and a shuttle launch helmet. Explore the music of "The Planets" at Pavilion Talk, a free pre-concert discussion led by noted music scholar Ira Black that provides insight into the evening's program. Children can discover the sounds of musical instruments at The Pavilion Partners Instrument Petting Zoo and can show their creativity making UFO's.
Your journey doesn't end there...Audi of America, official automobile of The Pavilion, is unveiling its new 2011 Audi A8.

Featured Artist: Dave Matthews Band
Dave Matthews Band returns to The Pavilion for a sold out show
Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. with Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears.
South African vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews formed the band in 1991 in Charlottesville, VA., when Matthews decided to record some songs that he had written. The band's first official gig was May 11, 1991, at a private party held on the rooftop of the pink warehouse on South Street in downtown Charlottesville. Local gigs soon followed with tours covering more territory and the fan base growing exponentially.

Dave Matthews Band released their independent album, "Remember Two," in 1993 followed by a live EP, "Recently," in 1994. Eventually they signed with RCA and released "Under the Table and Dreaming" in September 1994. They launched their hit single, "What Would You Say," from that album and sold more than one million copies. Their career launched from there as they continued touring around the country and releasing albums year after year.
Dave Matthews also went the solo route, releasing his first solo album in 2003 titled "Some Devil." The album was supported by a "Dave Matthews and Friends" tour that included Trey Anastasio, Brady Blade, Tony Hall, Ray Paczkowski and Tim Reynolds. Matthews won a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for "Gravedigger," the main single from that album.
Dave Matthews Band came back together soon after, releasing two live albums, "The Central Park Concert" and "The Gorge." They started touring again in 2004 and released "Live Trax" and "Stand Up" throughout the next year. They soon became the only band besides U2 and Metallica to have four consecutive number one albums.
The sold out crowd will enjoy the unique jazz and funk style of Dave Matthews Band this Friday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. For more information, click here.
Check out the House of Blues Hospitality Tent at The Pavilion before, during and after the show! It opens at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 10 for Dave Matthews Band and remains open approximately one hour after the concert. Admission is free for all concertgoers. Enjoy air-conditioning, private restrooms, a full-service bar, appetizer menu and live video-feed of the concert, when available. For more information, click here. |
