Forces of Nature Hits The Pavilion May 14

Hans GrafThe Houston Symphony's Forces of Nature May 14 at 8 p.m. showcases two great composers combined for a powerful night of classical music conducted by Maestro Hans Graf.

Lively and grand, Mozart's Symphony No. 41, or "Jupiter Symphony," is in constant motion from start to finish, including its glorious final fugue inspired by J.S. Bach. Marveled by Mozart's work, impresario Johann Peter Salomon nicknamed Symphony No. 41, "Jupiter Symphony," after the Roman mythological "king of gods" for its size and symphonic perfection. In this, his final symphony, Mozart did something revolutionary in the final movement with the use of counterpoint, or weaving together two or more different melodies.

Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, or "Pastoral Symphony," represents the composer's affinity for nature and his love for taking walks through the Vienna countryside. Beethoven's great love of nature is clearly expressed through the suggestive title of the symphony, as well as through titles of each segment. The symphony unquestionably offers eloquent testimony to the importance and power of nature in Beethoven's life.

Orchestra seating for both concerts is $15. Mezzanine and lawn seating are free courtesy of The Wortham Foundation. Orchestra tickets can be purchased at The Pavilion Box Office or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
