A Classical Performance with
 Chopin & Tchaikovsky Sept. 18

Hans GrafThe Houston Symphony's performance of Chopin & Tchaikovsky showcases the classical side of orchestral music Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. Maestro Graf conducts the world-renowned symphony in an evening showcasing three masters of classical music: Schuman, Chopin and Tchaikovsky. Ingrid Fliter accompanies the symphony on piano.

William Schuman's "Showcase, A Short Display for Orchestra" was written on commission for the Houston Symphony in 1986. Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 was composed in 1830. The main theme of the final movement, as introduced by the piano, is classic Chopin - a delicate and yearningly poignant melody reminiscent of some of his mazurkas.

For the finale, Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 was composed in 1888 and was first performed in St. Petersburg the same year with Tchaikovsky conducting. The theme of the music has a gloomy start in the first movement, but gradually transforms into a triumphant march.

Pre-concert activities for Chopin & Tchaikovsky begin at 7 p.m. Learn everything you want to know about  the above composers at Pavilion Talk, a free pre-concert

Pirouette to The Pavilion for Houston Ballet's Swan Lake + Two Oct. 9

Houston Ballet's Swan LakeHouston Ballet sashays on to The Pavilion's stage Oct. 9. with a performance of Swan Lake + Two, a mixed-repertory program featuring Act II of "Swan Lake," "Jardi Tancat" and "Falling Angels."

This program consists of three distinct dances showcasing the talents of internationally acclaimed choreographers.

"Swan Lake" is one of the most well-known works in ballet history and the second act is the core of the entire piece.  The performance features a full corps de ballet of dancers in fantastic white tutus. During Act II, the handsome prince meets a beautiful princess dressed in white feathers. Once he finds out she has been cursed by an evil knight, he pities her and they fall in love while dancing beside a moonlit lake.

In addition to Act II from "Swan Lake," Houston Ballet performs "Jardi Tancat," the first work choreographed by Nacho Duato, a Spanish classical ballet dancer and choreographer.

Lastly, enjoy Jiří Kylián's "Falling Angels," created in 1989 as part of the "Black and White" ballets. This piece showcases eight female dancers dressed in black leotards as they aim to achieve perfection while being pushed and pulled from different situations in life.

Gates open at 7 p.m. with pre-concert activities in the Fidelity Investments Plaza. Tickets are $15 for orchestra-level seating. Mezzanine and lawn seating are free courtsey of George P. & Cynthia Woods Mitchell and Anadarko Petroleum Corporation.
