Among the Pillars of Teak, Burma 2008
Seventy-five percent of the world's teakwood comes from Burma, now known as Myanmar. In representation of what it truly means to be Burmese, we were warmly welcomed inside of this fifteenth century all teak monastery by the elderly monks. While young apprentice monks studied in the early morning glow, we were allowed to witness them in their affairs self. The great teak forests of Burma are being threatened by exploitation and deforestation. By buying Burmese teak we threaten the largest remaining pristine tropical rainforests in SE Asia. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, has asked that other nations stop investing in Burma until democracy there is restored.
