Spirit Within, Papua New Guinea 2009
This is an Asaro Mudman. The Asaro represent the spirit world. Found in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, legend has it that the mudmen were defeated by an opposing tribe and forced to flee into the Asaro River.
They waited until dusk before attempting to escape. The majority of tribal people in Papua New Guinea are frightened by spirits. When the enemy saw the Asaro rise from the banks of the river covered in mud, they thought that the men were from the spirit world. Spooked, the enemy fled and the Asaro Mudmen were victorious.
A special thank you to the young woman in Dr. Springer's The Art of Being Human class at the University of Texas for bringing the 'Spirit Within' to my attention.
