November 2009 - NEW WORK FROM PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Image of the Month

PNG Asaro Mudman-M

Spirit Within, Papua New Guinea 2009

This is an Asaro Mudman.  The Asaro represent the spirit world.  Found in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea,  legend has it that the mudmen were defeated by an opposing tribe and forced to flee into the Asaro River. They waited until dusk before attempting to escape.  The majority of tribal people in Papua New Guinea are frightened by spirits.  When the enemy saw the Asaro rise from the banks of the river covered in mud, they thought that the men were from the spirit world.  Spooked, the enemy fled and the Asaro Mudmen were victorious.

A special thank you to the young woman in Dr. Springer's The Art of Being Human class at  the University of Texas for bringing the 'Spirit Within' to my attention.

Returning to Papua New Guinea on Assignment with Interoil Corporation

After returning to the States late August from my trip to PNG and after sharing my images of my time with Interoil capturing their rig and refinery, Interoil has offered me an assignment shoot on location in the late November/early December. timeframe.  They are expecting a 'historic' event that they have asked me to capture for them.
