That statement is my interpretation of Psalm 40:3. In verse 1 the psalmist shares how he waited for God (patiently and expectantly) and sure enough in verse 2 God showed up and pulled him out of the horrible mess he was in. By verse 3 the psalmist is praising God and declares many will see what God has done and trust God as a result. I love it. I claim that as my signature, and I say it in faith even while I'm still in the pit, trusting God is setting me up for an amazing rescue. While you're in the pit people are watching and thinking 'That's awful; that person is faithful to God and look at how God is treating them.' But when God shows Himself strong on your behalf everyone wants that same God on their side.

I think sometimes when we're going through something really intense - that pit experience; we can be tempted to give up because it's so painful or embarrassing or draining or difficult, etc. But it's not just about our personal experience; people are watching to see what kind of God we serve; to see if our faith will prove to be true or false. If we give up too soon then we've hurt others faith as well. The worse the pit you find yourself in, the greater the opportunity for God to prove He is God. I think about the 33 miners in Copiap�, Chile, who were trapped underground for a record 69 days because of a mining accident. Sadly there are mining accidents all over the world that we never hear about. These 33 men caught our attention because of the extremity of their situation. It was pretty bad, and people didn't think anyone could survive such an ordeal. As the ordeal continued and more days passed more people began watching. When those miners were finally rescued the whole world was watching and the whole world rejoiced with them.

That's how God often works in our lives. The worse our situation gets, the more people start watching. Many may feel sorry for us, see us as doomed, and think our faith misplaced, but when God pulls us out of that pit they want our God to be their God too. God is looking for people that will persevere with Him so He can prove to the world that He is a God that can be trusted. Jesus told His disciples not to despair about His 'pit experience.' It's no fun going down but Jesus knew it was when He was lifted up that it would draw all men to Him.
