I think the best prayers usually start with "Make me" not "Give me." When we say "give me" we are usually trying to tell God how to be God. When we say "make me" we are surrendering our will to God's will and way of doing things. Sometimes when I finally "catch on" to the lesson that God is trying to teach me there is a temptation to get frustrated and down on myself. Why didn't I see this sooner? Why did I waste so much time and energy on this lesson? Then I realize that ruminating over what went wrong is not being a good student. The important thing is I did get the lesson. I pray this prayer because I want to approach life as a good student; always ready to learn, and always looking for the lesson.

 

When a good student makes a bad decision that causes them to lose money (s)he sees it as tuition for a lesson learned. A good student doesn't get stuck on the failed tests, and is thankful that God gives yet another chance to get it right. A good student isn't the one who knows everything, but the one who knows how to learn. A good student knows there is a lesson to be learned from every experience, even if it is hidden and must be searched out. A good student knows the hardest learned lessons are the ones that tend to stick the longest. A good student doesn't avoid the hard tests or drop out of the challenging classes. A good student knows their lessons have been customized to fit their individual needs so (s)he doesn't worry about the other students. A good student has faith in the Teacher, and is humble, teachable and respectful. Lord make us good students.
