Part of walking by faith and not sight is trusting God is working in others in ways we can't always see. Most of us have had people in our lives like Job's friends who are quick to tell us what we are doing wrong or give us advice without recognizing the greater work God is doing in us. And we've had people persist in "over ministering" to us because they weren't waiting to hear from God before speaking/acting. And if we are honest, at some point most of us have been like Job's friends and those who over minister also. Following is an excerpt from my journal.

For a while I've wanted to write a message about not encouraging others for our own sake but for theirs. Too often our goal is to be the hero or see pain alleviated but it's a process, and God is the Healer.

 

I think that was a great benefit in counseling others. I learned that it is a process, often a very slow one, and that the individual must take responsibility for their own healing. And as a Christian I knew it was God that has to do the work in them. People have to receive from God, not me. God can use me to be His voice, but I need to be sensitive to Him and them in order to be that. I can't get into my flesh and bombard people with platitudes or even scriptures waiting for a visible change in their countenance and attitude.

 

I'm reminded of [a minister] who keeps coming after me trying to make me fall out on the floor - slain in the spirit. It's become an annoyance, and although I love him I almost don't want him to come towards me. He's too goal oriented and determined that I must fall out. He seems to feel like a failure when I don't fall. He seems to presume I must have some deep hidden pain if I don't fall out. He's so determined to see me fall that he doesn't realize he is making me feel worse. I know he's used to laying hands on people and seeing them fall out and that [probably] makes him feel effective. Well maybe I'm a test for him too. People are not slot machines that we put money into and wait for a jackpot. People are complicated and we must let God work in them whatever way He needs to. We have to have enough discernment to say and do only what He directs us to do; and we have to have enough faith to trust that it was enough, even if we see no indications of anything. We walk by faith and not by sight.
