"My athletic son works out all the time and has no body fat. Why does he have "man boobs?"
Dr. Caridi: Gynecomastia (the technical name for "man boobs") often manifests during adolescence, when your son's hormones are working overtime. Usually the excess tissue subsides after a year or so, but in a small percentage of people, the fullness persists. This can be quite psychologically troublesome for a young man at this critical developmental stage. Exercise and diet will have little influence over the fullness in his chest.
There are other less common causes of gynecomastia like medications, testicular tumors, herbal products, steroids, and alcohol and marijuana use. The vast majority of cases are treated with the removal of the breast tissue. To spare your child any psychological damage, my recommendation is to treat his condition sooner rather than later.
"How young can you be to get a breast augmentation?"
Dr. Caridi: More and more teenagers are looking to get a breast augmentation, and most requests come in around high school graduation. Whether the potential patients are old enough is controversial, but overall, teenagers are complaining of underdeveloped, absent breasts or breast deformities.
Most people believe that the patient must be at least 18 years old and should have parental consent, but I think it should be treated much more individually than that. I think if the individual is mature enough and psychologically ready to handle the outcomes of surgery, there is no reason why plastic surgery cannot be done. The teenager must be fully committed to make the change and must also understand the healing process of the surgery.
Top Five Reasons Why Men are Getting Plastic Surgery:
More than ever, men are paying greater attention to their appearance and are ready to consider plastic surgery to perfect it. Here are my top five reasons why the trend is growing:
1. Looking for a competitive edge in an office filled with younger people.
2. Perfecting what diet and exercise can't achieve.
3. Helping men to look the way that they feel.
4. The stigma attached to men getting plastic surgery has faded.
5. Shorter recovery times and more advanced techniques.
