Recovery Time is Critical - So Plan Ahead!
The weather has been crazy here in Denver of recent. Three weeks ago a storm came through where the rain and hail were actually going sideways. Got an urgent call from the kids at home saying that water was coming into the basement through the windows (at the window well locations). Everyone came together, pitched in and cleaned up all the water and dirt and the towels that soaked up the water. We had multiple fans on for a good week. We responded to this crisis in a reactive and stressful manner and several hours were spent cleaning up the mess.
So, just when I thought that we were "good to go", another storm came through and the basement (see photo) flooded again. We were able to be strategic this time by placing a barrier of towels (not seen in photo) to hold back the water from spreading too far. This is our reminder - as a homeowner- as to the importance of preventative maintenance. Information had been gathered and a plan was to be implemented, but we waited too long. We were able to get things "back up and running" a lot sooner and that's lucky.
In technology terminology, I would equate this story to having a faster recovery time. We consulted our Go To person (i.e. Shortcut) on how to solve this issue once and for all (as much as that is possible). What could have been 3 hours (as happened before) of clean up and then days of fans running to dry it up ended up being reduced by 50%. HOWEVER, it was still very stressful and physically tiring. All of us would rather have spent our time in a more productive and carefree manner.
Yes, my personal life is being used again to further the discussion of thinking ahead, valuing your time and the potential cost to your business by not having things (window wells or technology) in order. There are always people saying "I have never had a hard drive crash (in PC or server)." My firm's response is "it will happen, you just don't know when so be prepared!" (I never thought water would gush into my basement.)
What preventative steps has your business taken to avoid a "flood" or disaster at your business and how fast can you be up and running again?

The 2009 Recovery Plan: What It Means For Your Business
reprinted with permission from HP
When the going gets tough, the tough have a smart game plan.
And with over 2 million jobs lost in 2008, the situation is definitely getting tough. Fortunately, the US has relieved our 26 million small businesses-those which gross $15 million or less in profits annually[1]-in more ways than one with its 2009 Recovery Plan.
The new plan not only gives small businesses tax breaks and credits, it also plans to give your customers more money by providing them jobs. In the meantime, though, one of the best ways you can take advantage of the plan is by carefully investing in the future with updated technology and energy efficient solutions.
Even for larger businesses that don't directly benefit from the recovery plan, making these types of changes while business is slower can prepare you for when the economy picks up. Read on for more about the Recovery Plan |
