This fall, we are in the midst of something new and exciting. In the past, we typically had 3-4 build projects in production at once, with overwhelming numbers of volunteers and Habitat partner families waiting in the queue to participate. Times have changed. Right now, we actually have a total of 10 projects underway in Washtenaw County - 10 projects with plenty of volunteer opportunities for people and families...10 projects that are truly making a difference in the neighborhoods we are working in, right here in our community. I encourage you to come be a part of the exciting time here at Habitat - we are revitalizing neighborhoods, engaging our community, and helping hard-working, industrious families realize their dreams of homeownership for themselves and their children. Whether you are willing to donate your time, your financial support, or simply willing to reach out to a fellow friend, colleague, or family member to spread the news of what your local Habitat is accomplishing - we need friends like you to join with us and share in the amazing success of our work. It's incredible what we can do together.
P.S. You can learn about opportunities to get involved by visiting our website or calling us at 734.677.1558. |

World Habitat Day
A Day to Celebrate Habitat
World Habitat Day was on October 4, 2010! This is an opportunity to share with the world that simple, decent, and affordable housing should be a priority everywhere-in our communities, towns, country, and our world! Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley celebrated World Habitat Day with a weekend of events to honor the mission of Habitat. On Friday, Habitat staff swung hammers at a local renovation project, followed by over 70 people volunteering on various renovation projects on Saturday. On Sunday, volunteers ran and raised money for Habitat at the Big House Big Heart Run, and the Good News Group dedicated 1648 Harvest Lane with the White Family. Continue to support Habitat's efforts here in your community! Advocate-Educate-Donate! www.h4h.org |

Construction Department Grows
Stronger Team, Better Organization
The construction department here at Habitat is growing just like the rest of the organization and we are excited to share some changes that are taking place as we increase our capacity to renovate homes. We have recruited more house leaders to support our increased production, and we are doing better than ever at staying organized and involving volunteers in our work. We have delayed our standard Thursday start time in construction to 9am in order to meet as a department every Thursday morning from 7-8am. We tend to meet at one of the renovation projects and have had training sessions and guest presenters. This forum allows us to share information and gives the houseleaders time to get to their worksites to greet volunteers for Thursday's 9am start. Quitting time in construction is still 4pm. Come out and swing a hammer with us! |

Habitat Hero
Gene Smith
A faithful member of the Good News group, Gene Smith, passed away this summer. Gene Smith was a beloved and active member of the Habitat for Humanity Good News House community for many, many years. He contributed at many levels - from Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley through the Good News House group and his local church, West Side United Methodist in Ann Arbor. Memorial donations were given to Habitat and the funding was used to further his legacy in the Good News House projects. He will be greatly missed. |

The Wilson Family Home Dedication On Sunday, September 12, the Wilson family, along with dozens of volunteers, gathered on a beautiful afternoon to celebrate and dedicate their newly renovated home. A special thanks to Pastor Gretchen Bingea from Trinity Lutheran in Ann Arbor, who blessed the home, and Greg Ulmer, from Thrivent Financial, who has been a key player throughout the process. The house was sponsored by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and local Lutheran congregations. |

The White Family Home
Dedication
Many faithful volunteers from the Good News Group have spent countless hours this summer making this house into a home for Jay and Tonja, and their two beautiful children, Ryan and JJ. The home was dedicated this past Sunday at 3 p.m. at 1648 Harvest Lane. The Good News group has also renovated another home just down the street, at 1579 Harvest Lane. Both homes were open for tours.
The Good News group is a primarily made up of Methodist churches, but they welcome all congregations to join them. |

WCC: Washtenaw Community College
Construction Managment Program We are proud that the education and training of our community's youth is an opportunity that we here at Habitat can actively contribute. We've recently teamed up with WCC to work on two renovation projects. In addition to offering students in the Construction Management program hands-on training, these projects are being led by their professional instructors who volunteer their expertise, skills and passions to our organization. This partnership will result in the transformation of two formerly vacant foreclosed properties into homes to be sold to hard-working Habitat partner families next year. Additionally, the savings from this partnership (of time, money and leadership) will allow Habitat to renovate even more properties in Washtenaw County. |
