Habitat Heroes
Our first of many "Habitat Heroes" is Garth Ellis of Expert Home Services.  Expert Home Services installs, repairs and refinishes traditional hardwood floors.  Garth has almost 20 years experience in the business and has renovated floors throughout the Washtenaw County area.

Over the past three years Garth has donated his refinishing services to our annual auction, raising thousands of dollars.  Additionally, Garth and the Expert Home Services team have refinished floors for three of our recent renovations - 1124 Shirley, 1474 S. Harris, and 2128 Champagne for FREE!  The warmth of these original hardwood floors really completes the renovations - providing a low maintenance solution for our Habitat homeowners.  One of our new homeowners has already recommended Garth's work to her neighbor.

Yvonne Dulin Retires

Most people are not aware that what appears to be a simple concept- building houses with volunteer labor- actually requires the coordination of an incredible number of people and tasks, extensive planning, administration and fundraising in order to build just one house.  For those of us involved in the Habitat process, it is easy to forget that the goal of the whole endeavor is to provide a home for a family.

Yvonne Dulin has never forgotten that goal, and has made it her mission to assist families as they navigate their way through the Habitat process, from the time they are selected to partner with Habitat, through the construction of their homes, and for years after they sign their mortgages. Yvonne volunteered at construction sites and soon joined our Board of Directors in 1999, then quickly became the Chairperson and longtime member of Family Support Committee. Yvonne has helped nearly 30 families over 10 years and has recently announced her retirement from her role at Habitat.

Yvonne Dulin

Yvonne has helped our affiliate to grow and ensure that the needs of our families were understood and addressed. Yvonne's strength, vision, sensitivity, energy and commitment will be dearly missed, and her contributions to our affiliate and our families will not be forgotten.

Taylor House Dedication
On Sunday, February 21, 2010,  friends, neighbors, and many of the Habitat community joined Kyana Taylor and her family at 1474 S. Harris to dedicate her new Habitat home. The special day for the Taylor Family was marked by a full house, as every room on the first floor was packed with smiling faces. After Family Support Partner Joe Slowins presented Kyana with her Bible, tool kit, and quilt, Kyana graced the audience with a humble and heart-felt speech that thanked every single volunteer who helped build her new home.

K.Taylor Dedication

The Taylors' dedication was a beautiful ceremony on a gorgeous, spring-like day -- a perfect welcome to their new house. Everyone at Habitat is happy to have Kyana and her daughter as a permanent part of our family!
Congratulations, Kyana and Taylor.

Local Lutheran congregations and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will once again partner with Habitat Huron Valley to sponsor a home, this year located at 2836 Maplewood in Ann Arbor. This 3-bedroom home near Packard and Platt Roads will get a new roof, siding, insulation, kitchen cabinets and refinished original hardwood floors to name just a few of the renovations. Congratulations to the Wilson family who should close on their new home late summer. Construction is expected to begin in June with a six-day blitz and be completed in one month.

2010 Interfaith Build
1208 Share, Ypsilanti
Congratulations to the Krisel family for selecting this great home and thanks to many different faith-based congregations and student groups, we are well on our way to fully sponsoring this 4-bedroom renovation. We will officially kick the project off on Friday, April 9. Work will include scraping and repainting the existing cedar shake siding, extensive interior painting, new flooring and more. This build will include some Sunday workdays. Shown here is the kitchen and dining room "before".

The Aldrich Family Home - Sponsors Needed
1223 Evelyn, Ypsilanti
This 3-bedroom home with a garage will be purchased this summer by the Aldrich family. We have a house leader and plenty of laborers, but we are still in need of a sponsor. Interior demolition is done, rough trades have passed their inspections, insulation and drywall hanging were completed last weekend and work will now continue on Fridays and Saturdays through May. The "before" kitchen shown here will remain in the home.

GoodNews House #1
1579 Harvest Lane, Ypsilanti
Good News volunteers contact your congregational champions to find out when your church will be working at this home. We will begin with a new roof, windows and siding in early May, if not sooner but like many other homes we are renovating, the original hardwood floors and existing kitchen cabinets will stay in the home.

Sponsor Needed
1229 Warner, Ypsilanti
This is another recently purchased foreclosure in located Ypsilanti's Normal Park Neighborhood. This 3-bedroom with a full basement will be gutted to the studs and worked on throughout the summer. The cabinets, countertop, sink and appliances from this gut rehab will be resold in our ReStore!

GoodNews House #2
1648 Harvest Lane, Ypsilanti
Thanks to Ford and their hard-working employees who turned out March 4 and helped tear off siding, remove flooring and get new windows started in this home. Volunteer opportunities are posted on-line now for this gut rehab. A new roof will go on soon and trades will begin installing new plumbing, electrical and HVAC this month as well. Once drywall is in, the Good News congregations will take over and finish the home.

Sponsor Needed
1523 Wismer, Ypsilanti
This is one of our latest foreclosed property purchases. By the end of the year, Habitat will have eight homeowners spread throughout this great Gault Village/Nancy Park neighborhood. A family and sponsor are needed for this 3-bedroom home with a large garage. The home will receive new siding, a new roof, a new kitchen and new flooring among other things. Work is expected to begin in May and continue throughout the summer.

1523 Wismer

An average of $35,000 must be raised to sponsor each of these renovations.
Perhaps you, your church or your company can make this difference for a family.
