October 2008
Vol 1, Issue 7
Greetings!
Last month was filled with a number of wonderfully exciting activities here at Habitat. When we moved to our facility on Aprill Drive two years ago, we envisioned Habitat as a "HUB" of activity - opening our doors wide to homebuyers, volunteers, donors and shoppers - and we are seeing that vision become a reality.

Some of these recent activities included:

Habitat Home Dedication - We celebrated with Robert Kraft, the homebuyer and Doug Towner, the volunteer house leader as we dedicated our first rehab in 15 years!

Habitat Food Buyers Club - We met and distributed a truckload of food to individual homeowners in record time!

Habitat ReStore 2nd Anniversary Event - A great success with tons of new customers in the door and tons of inventory out the door!

Habitat Home Maintenance Class - 10 families attended a class on plumbing in our workshop.

Habitat Deconstruction Program - We have been contracted to do a number of projects, from replacing sidewalks to tearing down decks and are generating funds for more houses.

Habitat Rehab Program - Our rehab projects at 113 and 117 Miles Street are in full swing.  The Garland Street rehab was just dedicated to partner family Robert Kraft.  Work will begin on at least two more pre-owned homes in the coming weeks.

Habitat Home Construction - We have just received our Certificate of Occupancy on both the Good News House and the Thrivent Builds house on Firwood Street in Ypsilanti.  The families will be moving in very soon.

Habitat Workshop - We welcomed more than 50 members of the American Institute of Architects, or AIA, at a conference they recently held in our workshop. The event was sponsored by Structural Design Inc. of Ann Arbor who generously donated the nearly $1,100 in event registration fees to Habitat. The next week we held a Faith Works breakfast in our workshop and shared the Habitat story with long-time supporters from the faith community as well as new congregations that desire to help families in some of our outlying communities. Last week a volunteer built a new awning for the ReStore entrance utilizing the workshop tools and space and last night Baker College students applied their skills in our workshop by building a shed.

We look forward to what the rest of 2008 holds, and encourage you to read on and find out more about the latest news at Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley.

Sincerely,
Sarah Stanton

Home Improvement Workshop Questionnaire Results
Thanks to everyone who responded to our questionnaire a few months ago regarding home improvement workshops. The results are in and here's a list of the top ten requested workshops in order of preference:

1)    Basic home maintenance and repairs
2)    Basic electrical
3)    Basic plumbing
4)    Landscaping and gardening
5)    Installation of ceramic tile
6)    Furniture refinishing
7)    Flooring installation
8)    Home insulation and energy efficiency
9)    Installation of walkways and patios
10)  Recycling and how to be more "green"

We are excited about a new partnership with the Ann Arbor Public Schools Recreation and Education Program. We are pleased to have an agreement with them to publicize and handle registration for our workshops. We will provide space and instructors and will share the cost of any materials needed. Workshops will be scheduled beginning with the first three topics. Hopefully, an "energy efficiency and green" workshop, which has often been requested through the Rec and Ed department, will be scheduled as well. We will keep you posted about upcoming dates and times!

Garland Street Rehab Dedication
On Sunday, September 21, our Habitat friends, family and neighbors gathered to dedicate Robert Kraft's home on Garland Street in Ypsilanti.  Robert has been a partner family for two years.  He worked hard alongside house leader Doug Towner and 100+ volunteers to renovate and complete his home.  Robert's home was one of the first renovation projects we have done in Washtenaw County.  Robert's neighbors are thrilled that he is a new member of the community.

Garland Dedication

Habitat recently completed a home on Martin Street, near Robert's, and we are renovating two homes around the corner on Miles Street.  Most recently we purchased the home next door to Robert on Garland Street and will begin work there when sponsorship is in place.

Congratulations, Robert!
Miles Street Rehabs
We are currently renovating two side-by-side homes on Miles Street in Ypsilanti. 113 Miles should pass the rough inspections for all trades and for insulation by late October, allowing for drywall to be hung and finished in early November. Partner family Brian Stewart and Ann Clouse work each weekend on the house along with friends and family.

Pictured: The entire interior of 113 Miles looked like this future kitchen area when we took possession of the home. Walls with open studs were present throughout, but no HVAC or plumbing work had been done.

Next door, at 117 Miles, Robin Lee and her family come to work on her future home each weekend. Her roof was torn off and reshingled, flooring and siding has been removed, window openings have been reframed while windows are being ordered, and we continue progress toward completion. We continue our quest to find properties to purchase and renovate.

Going Green Pays Off for Habitat Homeowners
Exciting news! Our Good News House past the test first time through and is now ENERGY STAR certified. We expect to certify the Thrivent Builds home on Firwood in the next two weeks. Our families realize a savings of more than $350 annually because we build and renovate to energy certified standards.

Board members Rob Nissly, Mike Folk and Andrew Bennett ran the Big House Big Heart Run on Sunday, September 28th.  By doing so, they raised $4,000 for families in-need here in Washtenaw County.  Rob beat his goal of 20 minutes and came in 79th place at 19:58:5, soliciting some extra gifts from supporters.

We are so proud of our dedicated board members and the great lengths they will go to raise funds for our families!
