Greetings!
Families are Waiting -- Please Help Support Our 2008 Rehab Season.

Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley sees an exciting opportunity to turn the negative situation in our current housing market into a positive for our community.

The dropping home values have enabled us to purchase existing homes for rehabilitation. We have quickly re-organized our construction processes and will purchase our third rehab house this week. Rehabbing existing homes provides countless benefits for Habitat homeowners and our community; rehab homes are more economical to build, preserve existing resources, build up existing neighborhoods, and keep houses from sitting vacant and deteriorating surrounding home values. Habitat is trying to purchase and rehab as many homes as possible while the market allows us to do so, but we need your help.

Join us, get involved -- We are currently looking for house leaders, crew leaders, volunteers and funds to have as large of an impact as possible. We are currently purchasing homes to rehab for $35,000 - $50,000 and putting in an additional $25,000 worth of improvements. Compared to the cost of new home construction, $115,000, this is an excellent use of our resources.  We would like to take full advantage of what the market has to offer and provide more low-income families with the opportunity to own their own home.

Please consider if there is any way you can get involved. Put together a team of volunteers, bring your company on board as a sponsor, or sponsor a square foot of a rehab for just $50!  (Sponsor 2 square feet, and we'll send you a Habitat t-shirt!)  Sponsor on behalf of yourself, a loved one, a colleague or a friend.

Visit the donate page on our website.  Please direct your gift to the General Rehab Fund. We welcome your partnership!

Thanks for your commitment to Habitat during this important time.

First Tool Drive Big Success!
Many thanks to the 7-11 year old Camp Crusaders and their leader, Tiffany, from the Little Angel Daycare and Preschool for working with us to sponsor our first ever Tool Drive for our current build season. We are especially grateful to both the Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor Lowe's stores for allowing the kids to stand outside the main entrance two Monday afternoons and ask customers to consider purchasing extra tools to donate to Habitat.

Kids at Lowe's

Through the generosity of so many Lowe's shoppers, we collected 8 chalk line sets (some with refills), 14 utility knives & blade refills, 7 tape measures, 8 speed squares, 4 levels, 4 boxes of nails, 6 hammers, drill bits, screw driver sets, and 6 paint rollers.
Thank you Little Angels!

Announcing the Habitat Workshop!
We are proud to announce that Habitat has begun scheduling home improvement classes as well as group work days in the Habitat Workshop.  The work days will consist of building various materials to sell in the Habitat ReStore.  All proceeds will go directly to Habitat.

The home improvement classes will be open to the public.  Look for an upcoming survey to help us determine what topics would be of most interest to you.  Potential home improvement course topics include wallpaper installation, ceramic tiling, electrical, plumbing, landscaping, home decorating, etc.  When you receive your survey, please take a moment to let you us know what you think.  Thank you!
Dedication Scheduled for Robinson Home
When Donna Robinson first saw the blueprints for the Habitat house that would one day be hers, she felt as if someone had read her mind when designing the plans.  Everything was exactly as if she had worked with a custom builder to create her dream home.  That was in December 2007, and Donna has been learning a lot about building a home as she has been putting in her 300 hours of "sweat equity" in the construction of her home and other Habitat homes being built.  Her home is almost complete now, and a dedication celebration is planned for July 20th.

Donna is the mother of three children: a grown daughter and son, and a 13-year old daughter, Robin, who will be living with her in the Habitat house.  She herself was born in Alabama but has lived in the Ypsilanti area since she was nine years old.  She has seven brothers and sisters along with several nieces and nephews in the area.

Donna has worked for the University of Michigan in the Custodial Services Department since 2000 and spends much of her spare time involved in activities at her church, New Creed Missionary Baptist Church in Ypsilanti.  She has served as a trustee, helped out as a pastor's aid, assisted with babysitting, and has even driven the church bus when needed.  She said that the opportunity to own her own home, "is a feeling that I can't explain.  There's no way to explain what it feels like to see your dreams come true."

2008 Auction

As the Friends house nears completion, we are excited to announce the dedication of Donna Robinson's new home on Sunday, July 20 at 3:00pm. All are welcome to come and celebrate with another partner family realizing the dream of homeownership. Please join us at 627 Martin Place, Ypsilanti, 48198.
Garland Street Rehab Kick-Off!
Work kicks-off at the Garland Street Rehab on Thursday, July 10!  We will be building at Garland on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 8am to 4pm.  We are looking for volunteers to dig in and help out on our first rehab of 2008.  If you would like to get involved, visit our volunteer website today.
Good News House Update
Work continues at the Good News house into July.  The installation of the siding and soffit areas progresses.  The siding on the back of the house is completed and the north side is nearly finished.  The rough inspections of the plumbing, mechanical, and electrical trades have all passed.  With the rains of the past week, more settling of the fill sand and soil occurred.  This is still a positive thing though, as we want as much settling as possible before the final grade in August.

Many other small, but important, things were completed in the house to meet code requirements, such as special under-the-wall blocking for future attachment to the completed room walls, the basement stair railing, bathtub support, and filling all open holes from the attic and the basement to the main floor with fire stop expanding foam spray.  Good lunches have been enjoyed and appreciated each day scheduled volunteer groups work at the house as well.

Good News House

The crew will continue to work on assembling the backyard shed, getting electric power brought to the house underground, passing the framing inspection, and enjoying the momentum as the project moves forward.

For more information, please visit the Good News website.
The Latest News at Thrivent Builds
Progress continued throughout this past weekend despite torrential downpours from time to time. Thursday siding work persisted with the group being quoted as saying, "we are not setting this scaffolding up again on this side and we are not leaving until it is done!" And indeed, they finished it.

 Thrivent Builds House

Friday progress continued with many miscellaneous tasks being completed and work continuing on siding.  On Saturday, with the help of a few volunteers from churches, 3 people from HealthMedia, 12 from the UM Oncology & Radiology dept., and of course Tammie, Amanda and Darryl, the siding was nearly complete.

The front window finally got installed and work continued on framing in the basement in anticipation of insulation and drywall. Basement framing is also complete and major yard cleanup was done. The big accomplishment for the week however, was heating & cooling so that inspection can now be called for with the framing inspection soon to follow. The other rough inspections passed a week earlier.

Regularly scheduled work will resume on Thursday, July 10.  Lots of volunteer help will be needed from that point on. Log on to our volunteer website for the latest volunteer opportunities.

We are also looking for a crew of 8 or so to come in on Monday or Tuesday, July 7 or 8 to get the insulation in so we can drywall July 10-12.  Please contact Lynne Punnett at 734.677.1558 ext. 110 or lynnep@h4h.org for more information.
Stokely & Lukyanova Family Dedication
Stokely Dedication Resized

On Sunday June 1st, we celebrated with Natalya Stokely, her two daughters Katherine and Elizabeth, and her mother Yekaterina Lukyanova at the dedication of the completion of their Habitat home at 3410 Ferry Street in Ann Arbor.  It was a beautiful day, and over 50 friends, family, and volunteers were in attendance to celebrate another family becoming homeowners.
