Greetings!
Welcome to the May edition of Discover Habitat! We have a lot going on here at Habitat including new build kick offs, home dedications, rehab projects, exciting fundraisers, and more!  Read on to find out the latest news from your local affiliate.

Sincerely,
Your friends at Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley
Habitat Rehabs
As an affiliate we have chosen to venture outside the comfort of our past successful model into a broad range of complimentary options. We now are working on multi-family development and renovation of existing homes in conjunction with building new homes on a single lot.  The past model for Habitat, of building new single family homes on vacant lots, has been very successful.  Through the hard work of thousands of volunteers who have raised the money, driven the nails, and painted the walls we have been able to provide over 80 decent affordable homes during our 17 year history.

Within the last several months the falling prices of foreclosed properties have made the renovation of these homes economically feasible.  They represent an important part of our housing strategy.  At present we have five renovation projects in the pipeline with one just completed.  There are several reasons beyond pure economics that have driven our decision to pursue this path.  Through renovation we will be able to improve new neighborhoods that we have been unable to afford in the past.  We will be able to utilize some of the existing building on these rehabs to provide housing in a more environmentally conscious manner. We will be taking abandoned structures and bringing them back to life with laughing children and proud families through the hard work of our volunteers and donors.

Please join us as we expand into rehab projects  - we need leaders and laborers - check out our website for upcoming work days and join the fun!

Parker's work is sold at the Art Institute of Chicago and can be found at numerous regional art fairs as well.

Future Homeowner Spotlight
Brian Stewart, Ann Clouse and their children are excited about what their future Habitat home will mean to their family.  It means permanence, no worries about having to move again, a stable environment for their sons to grow up in, and the opportunity to walk about their neighborhood and be involved in a community.  As one of the families currently partnering with Habitat, Ann and Brian recently completed 50 hours each of sweat equity working on other Habitat homes, in the Habitat ReStore, and attending required classes, which now makes them eligible to be on the list for a property to be assigned to them for their home.  They both are excited about being involved in the building process on their own home and have lots of family in the area who are looking forward to helping out.

Ann and Brian both grew up in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area and met 17 years ago through a friend Brian played baseball with.  The two have been together ever since.  Their oldest daughter is in nursing school in North Carolina.  Their four sons, Jordan, Tyler, Elijah, and Anthony, live with them in their current Ann Arbor housing complex, and can be found playing basketball whenever possible - they even shovel snow off the court to play.  Her sons' love of playing basketball led Ann to apply for a grant from Jenny Jones to fix up the basketball court in their complex.  "I got an e-mail about the grant one day," Ann says, "and took a few minutes to apply - I never thought I'd get it."  A few weeks later she received a phone call from Jenny Jones letting her know that her project had been chosen to receive $10,000.  Ann was thrilled.   To read the complete article by the Ann Arbor News, please click here.

Brian works at Recycle Ann Arbor, and Ann is recovering from a serious accident.  After a couple tough years, they are excited now about the good things that are coming their way.  When looking forward to their future home, Brian recalls the words of his grandfather - it's "somewhere to hang your hat and say you're home."  And, having a home to call their own is a dream that will soon become a reality for this family.

Good News House and Thrivent Builds to Kick Off May 31
Everyone acknowledges the schedule is tight, but we are proceeding with fingers crossed that Mother Nature won't rain on our plans to begin construction on both the Good News House and Thrivent Builds House on Saturday, May 31.

The Good News House will be the home of Karen Tooson and her two children.  The Thrivent Builds House will be the home of Tammie Weinberg and her three children. Both are located on Firwood Street in Ypsilanti.

Thanks to local Comcast employees who volunteered their time on Saturday, May 3 as part of Comcast Cares Day! to help us prepare the Firwood lots for excavation and building.

House of Abraham Dedicated Sunday, May 4

After a very long fall/winter build, the day of dedication for the House of Abraham was upon us. It was very special with clergy from all sponsoring faiths present to bless the home of Taju Ali and Zabiba Mussa.

Taju and Zabiba have nearly completed their sweat equity hours and are incredibly grateful for the many individuals and groups of faith and corporations that turned out to help build their home. There is a small list of inside tasks plus concrete and landscaping work remaining on the outside of the house. We are still looking for some volunteers to help finish this house. Scheduled workdays are Saturday May 17 and May 31 from 8-4pm. If interested, please sign up on our volunteer website. Taju and Zabiba appreciate it.

Friends House Well Underway
Also following a long winter build, the Friends House/Robinson home is nearly complete. Drywall is hung and painting is now finished. The shed has been delivered and needs to be built while interior door and trim work continues. We hope to announce the dedication date in our upcoming June newsletter.
Comcast Cares Day!
Nationwide more than 50,000 Comcast employees worked in their own communities as part of Comcast Cares Day! Not only did they dig the trenches and install the silt fences on our two Firwood properties, some cleaned and cultivated our Habitat Community Garden on Firwood Street, some helped pick up and deliver furniture for our ReStore, and some helped remove the silt fence from our Women Build! house completed last fall.
Thank you Comcast!!!

A Salute to Our Outgoing Board Members

In March, we hosted the annual meeting of the board of directors for HHHV.  We had six outgoing board members this year - a great loss of leadership.  We will be looking to fill those positions over the next six months, more on this later. Each of the six outgoing members brought their own unique set of skills and talents to the organization, and will be greatly missed.

Dick Dyer --Dick served on our board for 4 years. Dick participated in our development committee, our ReStore committee and our nominating committee. Dick always brings a fresh set of eyes to each subject and often infuses humor to lighten the mood and raise our spirits.

George Johnston -- George was the secretary of the board for three years and has served on the finance committee for six years. George has brought great insight into our financial history. George often provided the historical perspective regarding our finances that enabled us to understand where our finances had been and how to move forward in an ever-changing environment. We hope to coax George into staying on the finance committee to provide the continuity that we so desperately need.

Jim Lannen -- Jim has been a wonderful part of our leadership team throughout his tenure. Jim has served as vice president and secretary on the board and has chaired our personnel committee, and most recently joined our site selection committee as well. Jim has been the person we always look to regarding our official board policies and bylaws. Jim's patient, thoughtful demeanor and careful attention to detail has helped us a tremendous amount.

Kathy Pustell --Kathy joined the board after having volunteered for many years on the family selection committee as well as one of our office volunteers. Kathy, like George, has seen us through a lot of changes in finance directors and helped to train our changing staff. Most recently, Kathy has been the Treasurer of the Board of Directors.

David Teare --David also joined the board after volunteering for many years with Habitat, both here in Washtenaw County, and also in St. Louis. In 2005, David and Paul Dannels were co-chairs of the Jimmy Carter Work Project. Nearly all of our home designs have been created and revised by David. Most recently, David has chaired our ReStore committee. Providing the critical leadership necessary to drive that new business forward and recruit the additional volunteers and expertise needed to enable it to be successful.

Marge Venema --Marge is another member of our finance committee that we are losing. Marge has served on the finance committee and chaired the committee for the last 4 years. Marge, like George and Kathy has lived through the turnover and re-education of Habitat staff with kindness and support.

Thanks to each of these wonderful volunteers. We look forward to a continued relationship with these leaders as they leave the board but continue as partners with Habitat.

Introducing Laura Webb, EMU Honors Student and Habitat Intern
Laura Webb

Laura grew up near Seattle, Washington and moved to Michigan when she was 12. She is a graduate of Saline High School, Washtenaw Community College and most recently of Eastern Michigan University with a bachelor's degree in Geology. We will miss Laura later this summer when she will move to Ohio to complete her master's degree with an emphasis on environmental geology. After completing her graduate studies at Bowling Green State University, Laura hopes to teach, work for an agency like the EPA or go on to get her Ph.D. and do research.

She is very close with her family, which is quite large including her parents, three older sisters, two little brothers, and many nieces and nephews. She enjoys outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, softball and also loves to read, write and learn new things. She attends Living Water Community Church, which meets in Lincoln High School. According to Laura, Living Water is an amazing community she feels lucky to be part of. When asked about her internship and experience with HHHV, Laura said, "I have never worked with people more passionate and committed to helping others than the staff at Habitat.  I really hope we can all stay in touch."
