Start With Your Smallest Change
Creating Success Momentum
Changing habits can often be very difficult. Many times its because we've chosen to either try to change everything at once or we've decided to attack the biggest thing on our list first.
When we have a success it promotes a sense of accomplishment and creates success momentum. If our first attempt to change is for something very big, there's a good chance we'll fail and that will quickly kill the belief that we can change.
Pick the smallest specific behavioral change on your list, like lowering the % fat of milk you drink from 2% to 1.5%, make that adaptation happen, enjoy the fact that you can indeed change behaviors, and move on to the next change item on your list.
With small successes you move forward in your journey. You get closer to your goal, unlike when you attack somehing big, fail and start back at square one.
So choose those small items first. Create momentum and the positive sense that you can do what's necessary to reach your goals.
Summer Workouts
Be More Than "Active"
Summertime in the health club industry, we notice a big shift in who is coming into the club for their workouts. Many of those that put their memberships on hold say the reason is that they are more physically active in the summer. They garden and do other yard work, hike, go for bike rides, etc. All of these things are great, BUT, there is still a need to have a regular, well thought out exercise program.
Typically, just being active doesn't work both sides equally, balance muscle strength work front to back, or take all major joints through full ranges of motion. The workout can be short, focusing on strength, and may not need to be done more than twice a week.
It can be done in a health club setting, at home, or on the road. Ask a Personal Trainer in your health club or have one come to your home to create that express summertime workout that will keep you improving your strength and fitness even while cutting down on your time committment.
Have a happy, healthy, and fit summer!
Quick Nutrition
Grilling and Sauces
It's the season for grilling. And cooking on the grill is a great way to reduce our fat intake. Unlike frying, with grilling the fat melts, drips off the meat, and therefore doesn't make it into our stomachs. (Yea!) However, often times the sauces (barbecue, etc.) can be culprits of weight gain. If you're buying your sauce, look for those with less sugar, salt, and calories. If you're making your sauce, you are now in control of those contents. Cut back on those less healthy ingredients. You'll be surprised how much you can cut back and not lose flavor.
Spice rubs are also a way of adding flavor and reducing those unwanted extra calories.
