Sacred Art: Drawing a Traditional Tibetan Thangka, August 1-29 (Sat)
Join the Venerable Lama Gyaltsen in an introductory course on drawing a
Tibetan Buddhist thangka. The thangka serves as an important teaching
tool in Tibetan Buddhism, and is traditionally a painted, drawn, or
embroidered banner that is hung in a monastery or a family altar.
Thangkas are popular among traveling monks because the scroll paintings
are easily rolled and transported. Thangkas offer a beautiufl
manifestation of the divine, being both visually & mentally
stimulating. They are used as a meditation tool to help bring one
further down the path of enlightenment.
Participants in this course will learn how to draw the images of a
Buddha using the ancient, traditional techniques of thangka painting.
Topics include: -Measuring and create a thangka stencil or grid -Drawing the images within the stencil/grid
-Understanding the symbolic meaning of the body of the Buddha. The
Venerable Lama Gyaltsen is the resident teacher at the Maui Dharma
Center. He has been a Tibetan Buddhist monk for over 40 years. He
studied in a monastic setting in India, and is learned in philosophies,
language, logic, and the arts - sacred painting, ritual dance, music,
