History & Culture of Hawai'i

Join Hinano Rodrigues & learn fascinating facts about Hawaii's unique history, culture, geology, monarchy, language, & ecosystem.

Participants who successfully complete this course & exam will receive a Tour Guide Certification Card & pin, which is recognized statewide.

Hinano is a Cultural Historian for the Hawaii Department of Land & Natural Resources.  He holds a B.A. in Hawaiian Studies from UH Manoa, and a J.D. from UC-Hastings College of Law in San Francisco.

CPR Skills Save Lives
CPR Certification Class

This course fulfills the OSHA requirements for CPR and First Aid.  The course is designed to teach you how to provide the emergency action measures for heart attacks, strokes, seizures, diabetic emergencies, breathing problems, shock, various injuries, and cardia arrest.  Students must be able to physically perform CPR and First Aid actions.

Join Leomer Domingo in learning important life-saving skills.  Leomer is a 17 year veteran of fire service.  He has an Associate of Science degree in Fire and Environmental Emergency Response from Honolulu Community College, and a BA in Business Administration from the University of Hawaii, West Oahu.

 

College for Kids (grades 4-8) & College Bound (grades 9-12) happens during the intercession weeks when DOE/private schools are closed.

We teach to the whole student, providing classes not normally found in the K-12 experience- enrichment that is project-oriented & interdisciplinary.
 
What happens at College for Kids?
· A central theme each week
· Classes M-F, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
· Introduction to the college environment & 21st century careers
· Art, music/dance & technology classes
· Walking field trips-Media studios, Culinary, others; off campus field trips on selected weeks

Bellydancing for Beginners with Beka
August 5 - September 9, 2009

Looking for a new workout routine?  Then come join in on the fun in Beka's belly dance class.  Her style is based on dance movements she has learned from many regions such as the Middle East, North Africa, India, and Spain.

Students will learn simple movements and combinations that will improve your dancing, while strengthening & toning your muscles.  Focus is placed on specific muscle isolation, proper body mechanics, and correct posture.

Beka began studying tribal style bellydance in 1990 with FatChance Bellydance in San Francisco.  She started performing with the troupe "Second Skin", at a variety of festivals and events. 

Beka moved to Maui in 1996, and began teaching classes locally. From 2002-2003 she produced the successful dance productions, "Gypsy Spirit" and "Magic Carpet".  Beka formed the locally acclaimed, BellyRoll Dance Company with dedicated students Kristyn, Brooke, and Karli, in 2003. 

Beka also enjoys designing bellydance costumes, and has clients worldwide.  She formed the costume company, BellyRoll Costumes in 1998.

Office Computing Certification

Learn the fundamental skills required to use common office computer applications.  The Certification in Office Computing Skills is designed for people who want to prepare for employment in office environments.  It is also for office workers who want to add commonly used office computer skills to their knowledge.  All courses in the program include extensive hands-on experience.

Recommended preparation classes include: Computers for Beginners, and Keyboard Typing For Success.  At time of registration, students who plan to enter this certificate program must notify the Registrar in order to be eligible for certification.
