Greetings!
The VITEC-Continuing Education & Training Team sends you best wishes and blessings for a transformative year in 2009. These are challenging times, and many are feeling the impact created by the downturn in our global economy. However, when there are challenges, there are also opportunities to grow. This period of uncertainty is a great reason to take the time to learn a new skill or enhance your skills to become more marketable and more effective.
As Dr. Stephen Covey states in his book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, you must make time to "sharpen the saw" in the four dimensions of your life - mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual. We hope that you take some time to consider the classes in this catalog with the view of "sharpening the saw." Many of our classes are new, and all will help you "Resolve to Evolve." This is our challenge to you! Happy New Year!
-The VITEC Team

VITEC Celebrates it's 20th Anniversary!
Then & Now . . .
Over the last 20 years, VITEC (Vital
Innovative Training
& Economic Development
Center) has grown to be a leading-edge
training organization dedicated to enhancing the professional and personal
lives of Maui County residents, visitors, and
businesses. VITEC currently serves over 10,000 participants annually,
and employs over 100 training professionals.
Founding Director, Lois Greenwood, says VITEC was first
conceived in 1988, after a survey done by the County of Maui identified that local
economic development lacked infrastructure in workforce training. A program that provided the local workforce
with competitive skills was sorely needed, and the timely idea to launch a training center for the
visitor industry workforce was born.
Through the generosity of hotelier & philanthropist, Charles
Sweeney, the idea became a reality.
VITEC first opened it's doors in January 1989, from a
converted WWII quonset hut rented from The Maui News. With imagination & resourcefulness, the quonset
hut was converted into a beautiful center with classrooms, offices, and a
conference room. In addition to visitor
industry training, VITEC began to offer computer classes. VITEC enjoyed serving the community from this
location for a few years.
In the mid 1990's, VITEC was provided with office space at
the Maui Research & Technology Center, through a partnership between the Tech
Center & the University of Hawaii, Maui Community College. As an incubator for economic development and
small businesses, the Maui
Research & Technology Center needed a way to provide workforce
training for their hi-tech entrepreneurs.
VITEC became a link that provided this vital service. VITEC expanded their services, and began to offer business training. National award-winning VITEC programs developed during this time frame include RITE (Retail Industry Training In Excellence) and RISE (Restaurant Industry Service in Excellence).
In the year 2000, VITEC received the good news that the newly
built Laulima Building
at Maui Community College was ready for them to
move into. Reflecting VITEC's origins of promoting hospitality and service in the visitor industry, the VITEC staff designed the lobby to simulate the feel of a hotel front desk, where the customer would always find a friendly face. Other distinctive touches featured in the lobby design include the beautiful spiral staircase, tall ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a Hawaiian breadfuit logo tiled into the lobby floor.
Through the
years VITEC has custom designed training programs for all the premiere Maui resorts in areas
such as hospitality, Hawaiian culture, and multicultural diversity
issues. One of their clients, the
Ritz Carlton Kapalua, hired VITEC to develop a customized training to educate their
employees about a sacred burial site on the Ritz Carlton premises. Lois worked with leading Maui Kumus to develop a program that taught the Ritz Carlton employees how to properly
respect the sacred site using traditional Hawaiian chants, offerings, and
ceremony. Through this "Sense of Place"
training, the employees still to this day take great pride in being the stewards
of this sacred burial site.
By the mid 2000's two other programs (PACE & CompTech)
were merged into VITEC. After a year of reinventing itself, VITEC immerged as
the comprehensive training program that we are familiar with today. VITEC offers continuing education &
training in business & professional development, computer technology, and personal enrichment. Customized workplace trainings are also available. Through its numerous programs, VITEC's goal is to help increase the
competitiveness of Maui's working people and businesses to meet the challenges of a dynamic, global
marketplace.

TESTIMONIAL "What an unforgettable experience I enjoyed at Boot Camp for Goddesses. It's like coming home . . . returning to a body, a soul, a spirit that got lost along the way . . . Thank you for putting together a program that speaks gently and firmly to all of that we are as women, and all that we can be for ourselves and others."

Quote of the Month
The most important ingredient we put into any relationship is not what we say or what we do, but what we are. And if our words and our actions come from superficial human relations techniques rather than from our own inner core, others will sense that duplicity. We simply won't be able to create and sustain the foundation necessary for effective interdependence.
--Stephen Covey
