Need a Good Book?

Do you like to read, or are you part of a book club looking for a great book? Hear from local CASA volunteer Lewis Luchs about his recently-published memoir. Children of the Manse is a heart-warming story about the four Luchs children who have the unlikely opportunity to heal wounds of abuse through adoption into a loving family.

Join us for one of three free preview events where you will hear about the book from Mr. Luchs. Books will be available for purchase and all proceeds go to support CASA. Bring a friend or your whole book club!

National Child Abuse Prevention Month

Child abuse is an unfortunate reality every day of the year. During April we commemorate National Child Abuse Prevention Month with a heightened focus on raising awareness about vulnerable children who need our help.

You can help keep our community's children safe by doing one of the following five things:

1) Download an informational flier to post in your workplace or email to others to raise awareness.
2) Learn how you to get involved as a volunteer.
3) Forward this email onto a friend to spread the word about CASA.
4) Attend a CASA event.
5) Make a donation to CASA.

Did you know?
*1,000 children live in foster care in Lane County because of abuse.
*Last year, child abuse increased by 35% in Lane County.
*CASA has a waiting list of more than 600 children.
*YOU can make a difference for a child today.

CASA Witnesses Father-Son Bond

Joshua, a 3-year-old Autistic child, was removed from his home when Child Protective Services discovered both his parents were drug-addicted and neglecting their son. Joshua's father wanted to get his son back, and began court-ordered services. The DHS caseworker was not in favor of returning Joshua to his father at any point.

The CASA became very involved in the case, making sure he stayed in contact with Joshua's dad and all the service providers. The CASA observed most supervised visits between Joshua and his father.

In the process, the CASA began to witness something no one else had noticed: the strong bond between Joshua and his father. Joshua had never been able to make eye contact with anyone, but the CASA observed the visits and saw eye contact and a smile every time he saw his father. The CASA determined this father was sincere in his quest to regain custody of his son.

In court, the judge listened to the CASA's recommendations that Joshua be returned to his dad even though DHS was not in favor. The judge ruled in favor of the CASA's recommendations, and Joshua was returned to his father. Today, Joshua and his father are doing great together.
